The Start of Islam Out of the many interesting religions of the Far East Islam has quite a uniqueness to it. The name, Islam stems from the word "salam", that means peace. The word "Muslim", which means a follower of Islam, refers to a person who submits him or her self to the will of God. Many religious experts believe that the prophet Muhammad founded Islam in the year 622 CE. Muhammad was believed to have lived from 570-632 CE. This particular religion started when the angel Jibreel read the first revelation to Muhammad.

We know already that the followers of Islam are called Muslims. The Muslims believe in the "one true God", which they call Allah. Muhammad was born in the year 570 CE. When he was growing up, he was sent into the desert in order for a roster family to raise him. The young Muhammad was orphaned when he was 6 years old but brought up by his uncle. While Muhammad was young, he worked mostly as a shepherd.

Later on in his youth, he was given the job of being a camel driver on the trade routes between Syria and Arabia. Throughout his travel, he meat many people of different religious beliefs. Muhammad was able to observe members of Christianity, Pagan, and Judaism religions. After Muhammad married, there was more time for meditation for him. Supposedly, at or around the age of forty, the angel Gabriel (Jibreel) visited him while he was in Mecca. From then on he believed that he had been ordained a prophet by Gabriel, and that his concern was converting his countrymen from their polytheistic or pagan beliefs.

Muhammad found much opposition to his teaching when he was trying to convert people. Because of this, in 622 he moved to Medina, which was north. During his time in Medina, Muhammad had much trouble trying to get his message across to the Jews. Muhammad, through many troubles, by discussion, persuasion, and political discussion became a very powerful leader in Arabia. From then on Islam was very established throughout the area. After many years, Islam had expanded to India, China, and as far down as Spain by 750 CE.

There are two very important books for Islam, like the Bible is for Christians. They are called the Qur " an, and the Hadith. The Qur " ra means the words of God, it is mostly spelled Koran in English. The Hadith is mostly collections of the proverbs or saying of Muhammad. They are supposed to be a very good guide for living the Islam life. From these books, Islam has many beliefs and practices.

A Muslim has certain duties, five of them. These duties are called the Five Pillars of Islam. They are 1) to say the shahada h, a Muslim creed at least once during their lifetime. 2) They are to perform a prayer called the salt five times a day.

It is done in the morning, at noon mid-afternoon, after sunset, and prior to sleeping. 3) To donate to charity regularly by the. Muslims should make donations when ever the feel the need to. 4) During the month of Ramadan, the Muslims are to fast. Ramadan is supposedly the month out of their calendar that Muhammad was visited by Gabriel. 5) If at all possible, make a one pilgrimage are hajj to Mecca in their lifetime.

There are many different people of Islam. There are about three main groups. The Sunni Muslims, Shi " it Muslims, and Sufism. The Sunni Muslims make up about ninety percent of the believers in Islam. They are considered to be very traditional people. Their three sources of teaching that they follow are the Qur " an, Hadith, and the Muslim consensus.

The Shi " it Muslims constitute a very small part of the Islamic population. They are also split from the Sunni because their beliefs dispute about the successor to Muhammad. Their leaders only follow the Qur " an and follow its teaching very strictly. Sufism is a tradition that followers seek inner knowledge from God directly through meditation and rituals. The Sufis developed because of a reaction to the formalism and laws of the Koran.

Although these three particular beliefs seem different, they share many common beliefs. The believe that God is the creator. They have much respect for some of the early Christian prophets like Moses Abraham, and Jesus. The Muslims believe that Jesus is a prophet that was born of the Virgin Mary.
