My Best Friend example essay topic

370 words
Many people have good friends. I have many. I hate to call anyone my "best friend" because I don't want anyone left out. But when anyone asks who my best friend was in school, I have to say, without pausing, Neal. In the Northern Virginia area, home of the Transient Job Phenomena, having a friend that lasts more than a few years is rare. While your family may stay put, others move in and out ever few years with the lobbying tides of the Washington DC area.

This is due to either military reasons (we have several bases nearby, as well as the Pentagon), government reasons (State Department, Senate, NASA, and so on), or nowadays, people in the IT industry, which not only can do their jobs remotely, but change owners faster than one can say "restructure". As may be evident in other essays, I was not Mr. Popular. In elementary school in the 1970's, I was a "book worm", which is almost like being a leper, only not as pleasant. I think part of this was that a lot of people, realizing the US lagged behind other nations as far as education, tried to cram the concept of reading down kids throats.

But they did it all wrong. They blamed books and comics we liked and tried to ban them, while forcing us to read "classics", which for the most part were either seriously boring or meant for a far more sophisticated target audience. Face it, "Moby Dick" to a ten year old is a book about some crazy guy after a whale. Melville is a very difficult author to read, and the concept of chasing one's dreams and revenge are really kind of lost to someone who isn't and adult. Not to say kids are stupid, but who can really understand "The Crucible" or "The Scarlet Letter" until they have a fair amount of adult mature experience to refer to.

If you are over 30, and reading this, try some of the classics now. I bet you will catch yourself saying. "Oh, I get it now!" at least once per chapter.
