Walter M. Hayden My great-grandfather was a combatant in World War II and a very courageous man. He was born Walter M. Hayden on January 22nd, 1920 in a small town in Nebo, North Carolina. He was a very intelligent, handsome man. He was honorably discharged from the military service of the United States of America in October of 1945.

He and my great-grandmother, Willie Mae Green, conceived only one child within their forty-six year union. My grandmother Margaret Green didn't meet her father until the year of 1990. When my grandmother first united with her father, she came to discover that he was blind. He was residing in a nursing home in North Carolina. He had lost his right leg due to diabetes in 1988. He worked at the Institution for the Blind in North Carolina.

Walter M. Hayden died when he was seventy-four years old in 1994. Walter M. Hayden was an automobile service station attendant in the military. He was stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina Army Base. He was entered into active service on November 7th 1942. Fort Bragg is one of the largest military installations in the United States. The population of the post during the war years reached a peak of 159,000 in enlisted personnel.

My great-grandfather was awarded an E amet Campaign Medal with four Bronze Service Stars. He also received a Good Conduct Medal while serving in the military war. His total length of foreign service was for two days, three months, and fourteen days. His length for continental service was for eight months and five days. He departed from the service on July 8th, 1943.

My great-grandfather participated in the battle of Normandy in 1944, Northern France, and Rhineland Central Europe. In the battle of Normandy over two hundred thousand buildings were destroyed. Six hundred and fifty five out of seven hundred inhabitants had lost their homes. Over 9,000 Americans were killed during the ten weeks of fighting.

World War II also marked the end of Germany's occupation of the majority of Europe. World War II was the largest armed conflict in world history, and is considered to be the most violent war ever. My great- grandfather was a very loving, respectful man. My great aunts described him as being very caring and adorable young man.

He was a man who would always put others before himself. He cared for people and children around him as if they were a major part of his life. He loved to read. He was a very educated young man. His philosophy on education has traveled throughout our family.

My grandmother had eight children, six girls and two boys. From all her children she has fourteen grand children. Education plays a major role in our family, especially for the younger generation, which would include myself. Amongst my grandmother's children, all have graduated from high school, and four have graduated from college. Currently amongst her grand children all are either in high school, or attending college. Walter M. Hayden in my eyes was a hero.

He helped secure freedom for the United States of America. He was such a brave and courageous man. Our family has a strong foundation to love, honor, and respect one another thanks to his legacy. The value of having a close and strong relationship with your family to me is phenomenal. I Though I personally never had the chance to meet my great-grand father, his spirit lives within my heart; and I will always love him.
