Announcement #38: (a / o 6/24/02): Updates, Deadlines & 'Convergence': 1. All work posted a / o this morning has been read and graded EXCEPT the Final Project papers (Exam) which I'm going to wait until most of the se are posted and grade them together. 2. DEADLINES: All work including the Final Project paper must be posted no later than 11: 00 PM EST on 7/10/02. This gives ne 5 days to grade all work and to compute all final course grades for posting onto the UMUC IFIS system by my deadline to do so. This is a 'hard' deadline dictated by the UMUC system deadlines.

Students who fail to have all their work posted by this deadline risk getting an 'I' for a final course grade. So, make use ALL of your work is posted by this deadline! 3. I just responded to a question in the Open Forum re the concept of Convergence. I'm also posting my response here in case any other students also need this again: While the concept of 'Convergence' is VERY important to understanding the current leading-edge theories about communication and communication trends, there is not very much 'basic' or introductory level writing (books articles) on this out there.

The concept of 'Convergence' is a basic idea that is difficult to study because it involved the merging of rather complex technologies. The gist is this: As communication continues to evolve, and as technologies continue to change exponentially (i.e. Moorse's Law'), the tendency is to merge -- that's why we call it Convergence -- technologies from different applications areas into one. here is an example: Nokia's latest phone is really a small 'personal communicator' combining a cell phone, a computer and a wireless Internet system. This is an application tool that merges the capabilities of what would otherwise be found in three different units. This is an example of Convergence. Is Convergence a good idea? Often, but not always.

The computer I'm using to type this response to you on has the ability, via interconnection with the other systems here in my studio, to be showing TV programs in a window at the same time as I'm working on o the r programs or online. Why I would want to sue, I'm not sure, but I could. So, the concept of Convergence is rather straight forward. The details of the technologies's involved and how they can be made to overlap is not simple to explain. Also, the concept after is being talk about under other terms not always using the somewhat newer form of the term 'Convergence', as in some of my writing in the Modules. Otherwise, the term 'Convergence' would appear over and over and over again.

The right term to use, but not very good writing style. JCSAnnouncement #37: (a / o 6/19/02): Yet Another Update: All work posted a / o 2: 30 PM EDT has been read / graded /credited. Thanks to those of you who have taken the time to respond to my mini-essay on Grading & Feedback Issues. JCSAnnouncement #36 (a / o 6/18/02): More Updates: All work posted to this course site a / o 1: 45 PM EDT has been credited / graded.

One student's work had to be deleted because it contained a virus. You should all have an up-to-date anti-virus program on your computers to avoid having all of your postings to the course site erased due to anti-virus protection. Good dialog going on re censorship in the Open Forum. I posted a contribution to this dialog this morning.

Thanks for the few of you who have read and responded to my special conference on 'Grading & Feedback Issues'. I encourage all of you to read my mini-essay on this and post your comments as a response. JCSAnnouncement #35 (a / o 6/17/02): Grading & Feedback Issues: I am posting a special Conference in which I explain my grading process and how it relates to my online course teaching style. Please read this, and comment if you wish (optional).

JCSAnnouncement #34 (a / o 6/13/02): More Updates & Misc: 1. Another day, another storm, another systems crash! FYI all, my new satellite-systems are down, AGAIN! I'm posting this via my laptop with telephone modem.

I won't be reading / grading student's work until Monday now. Sorry, but this old system is just too slow and unreliable. 2. I'm still getting a few emails -- just a few -- from students who still do not understand how the grading works and how I evaluate student's work.

Since the style of this course (which.
