My Team In A Football Match example essay topic
My confidence in my abilities has been strengthened by the belief that Sapient leadership has bestowed in me, by providing me with the opportunity to play the role of a manager in just two years as compared to a normal person getting this opportunity after five years of experience. In one of my projects for a UK based health services organization vie life, I got an opportunity to lead a team of 6 people who were fresh graduates from college. I was not only able to successfully educate these people about client's business and technology but also able to mentor them step into the professional world with confidence in themselves. I saw that these people were very smart and full of energy. They just needed someone guidance to route their energy to work effectively. I started encouraging them to step-up and take ownership of tasks by asking them to over-shadow me in the client meetings.
This boosted their self-confidence and also helped them get the bigger picture and laid a solid foundation for their career at Sapient. I achieved a great sense of satisfaction seeing them get involved in different projects, executing successfully and leading teams to grow many such leaders. In another project, for Cingular (a major US wireless company), the Project Architect had to leave unexpectedly at a very critical phase, where the risk of bringing in a replacement from outside was high, and I was asked to step up and take the responsibility of leading the 18-member delivery team. It was soon apparent that there were problems within the team amongst the members, where people were complaining behind each other's back, productivity was falling and the target was slipping. I was able to identify and address specific issues by meeting each team member individually and encouraging more open communication within the team. As a result we delivered the project on schedule and client satisfaction was such that Sapient won 3 follow up engagements.
Personally, I feel great satisfaction in seeing this team gel, build long lasting relationships and deliver on time despite the tight deadlines and challenges faced by us. I have also been actively involved in team sports like cricket and football. There was one instance during my school days when I was leading my team in a football match and we lost the match 0-3. I saw my team become overly self critical after losing and encouraged that we talk about it rather than fight. After identifying the problem, focusing on it and practicing hard, we were able to defeat the same team in the next match.
In the end, the team celebrated because we had learnt the power of working together. These experiences have helped me demonstrate to people that their belief in my abilities stands its worth.
