Adolf Hitler Adolf Hitler was a German government leader and is considered one of the 20th century's most powerful dictators. He converted Germany into a military society and then he started World War II. Hitler built up the National Socialist Party. Organizing meeting after meeting, Hitler spread his beliefs of racial hatred and contempt for democracy.

For a time during World War II, he controlled most of Europe and North Africa. During that time he ordered the slaughter of millions of Jews and others whom he considered inferior to Germans. He wanted to rid the world of all people that he considered inferior to Germans. Adolf Hitler was born in Braunau am Inn, Austria, on April 20, 1889. He was a poor student, he never completed high school.

He applied for admission to the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, but he was rejected for lack of talent. Staying in Vienna until 1913, he lived first on an orphan " 's pension, later, he lived on small earnings from pictures he drew. He read constantly, developing anti-Jewish and antidemocratic views. In the first World War, Hitler, by then in Munich, volunteered for service in the Bavarian army. He proved to be a loyal, courageous soldier, but he was never promoted beyond private first class because his superiors thought he lacked leadership qualities. In September 1919 Hitler joined the nationalist German Workers " party, and in April 1920 he went to work full time for the party, and it was soon renamed the National Socialist German Workers' (Nazi) party.

In 1921 he was elected party chairman. In November 1923, a time of political and economic chaos, Hitler led an rebellion in Munich against the postwar Republic, proclaiming himself leader of a new tyrannical government. Without military support, however, the rebellion collapsed. As leader of the plot, Hitler was sentenced to five years' imprisonment, but he really only spent eight months in prison. While in prison, he spent most of his time writing his autobiography, Mein Kampf, which means "My Struggle'. It was about his plans to take over the world, and how he was going to do it.

He was released early in December 1924, and he soon rebuilt his party without interference from those whose government he had tried to overthrow earlier. When the Great Depression struck in 1929, his explanation was that it was the Jewish people's fault. He Promised a strong Germany, jobs, and national glory if elected. He attracted millions of voters.

Nazi representation in the parliament rose from 12 seats in 1928 to 107 in 1930. During the following two years the party expanded and it benefits from growing unemployment. When Hitler was appointed leader in January 1933, he quickly established himself as a dictator. Thousands of anti-Nazis were taken to concentration camps and all signs of disagreement vanished. The economy, the media, and all cultural activities were brought under Nazi control by making an individual's livelihood dependent on their political loyalty. Hitler depended on his secret police, the Gestapo, to frighten his political opponents, but most Germans supported him enthusiastically.

The support of the German people was all he needed to establish German rule over Europe and other parts of the world. Hitler scorned the belief of humane quality and claimed that Germans were the master race. As the masterrace, he believed they had the right to control all nations they considered inferior. Hitler attacked Poland in September 1939. The Poles were quickly defeated, and their allies, the British and French, who had declared war on Germany, would do nothing to help.

In the spring of 1940 Hitler's forces overran Denmark and Norway. A few weeks later Germany defeated the Netherlands, Belgium, and France. The defeat of Britain was prevented bythe Royal Air Force, which fended off the Germans. As the United States entered the war, Hitler realized that the war was lost militarily, but he still refused to give up.

Hitler decided to keep fighting, he felt that Germany did not deserve to survive because it had not lived up to its mission. He hoped that some new weapon or a clever maneuver could save them, so he wanted Germany to keep fighting. On July 20, 1944, a group of Hitler's own officers attempted to assassinate him, but he miraculously survived. Throughout the war the campaign to eliminate all Jews continued, and endless trains took millions of Jews to extermination camps. There were about twenty concentration camps in Germany. Millions of Jews died or were murdered at these concentration camps.

They died of disease and starvation, or they were murdered by the Nazis. In all, over six million Jews were killed in the Holocaust. Finally, on April 30, 1945, with all of Germany overrun by Allied invaders, Hitler committed suicide in his Berlin bunker. His long-time companion, Eva Braun, whom he had married the day before, also committed suicide.

Hitler was a cruel man who thought that Germans were the masterrace and that other people should not be living because they are not worthy. He told the Germans he would help the country recover. He got them to believe him, he gave them hope. Their country was in bad shape, and he promised a strong Germany and national pride, so the Germans elected him.
