The poem 'The Ballad of Calvary Street' by James Baxter, the film 'American Beauty' (directed by Sam Mendes and released in 1999), and the play 'An Inspector Calls' written by J.B. Priestley and performed at Circa Theatre in 2005, are all texts that share a similar theme. Although these three texts are different in terms of authorship and the medium through which the significant messages are communicated, what the texts do have in common is that they all convey ideas about how facades and superficial images of family life only lead to soullessness and domestic disorder. The unique approach that each text takes to this issue heightens the impact of the texts in every case, and allows the discussion of facades to become more pertinent in a time when domestic problems still mar our society. Baxter's poem, 'The Ballad of Calvary Street', sat irises the concept of facades and fake family life by ironically using religious imagery, and by utilizing figurative language and clever diction to develop a rounded depiction of the sad characters at the heart of the poem.

The poem discusses firstly the trellises that line Calvary Street (an image which conventionally would symbolism happy domestic life), and mentions the flowers that bloom "as bright as blood". In addition to being an insidious suggestion that there is violence beneath the veneer of this seemingly respectable society, this phrase also alludes to the crucifixion of Christ. This is confirmed by the line that later describes the house as "an empty tomb". This evocative metaphor hints that the house is a place of depression and emotional soullessness, and again links this home to the story of Christ; however, Baxter is comparing this house to Christ's story only ironically.

Through the use of religious language, Baxter is able to sardonically indicate that the values of forgiveness and compassion so often connected to The Bible and religion are nowhere to be found in this unhappy home. To emphasise that religion plays no role in this distorted version of family life, Baxter intersperses the religious language with mundane descriptions (for instance, he writes, "the afternoon goes, goes by, while angels harp above a cloud... ". ) to show that spirituality - and indeed, all ideas of ethics and morality - are forsaken in this barren location. Baxter tells in the poem of how "two old souls go slowly mad", and constantly selects words that smartly suggest the fact that beneath the apparently happy facade, there is a cold empty reality where real love is nowhere to be found. For instance, once the children of the "two old souls" visit to "pay their dues" (a phrase that indicates that it is an action carried out only to maintain this facade), the group looks through "family files". The "files" refers to photographic albums, but the alliterative phrase used by Baxter hints more that the process is a mechanical, business-like procedure. Such a description highlights the soullessness of family life, partially caused by attempts to maintain a facade of happiness.

Furthermore, Baxter accentuates the reluctance with which the members of the family go about their daily duties by stating that the old husband walks out to the garden in "boots of lead". This reinforces the fact that attempts to ensure that the family may appear to be happy only lead to disappointment and dissatisfaction. The manner in which Baxter infuses religious imagery to emphasise unhappiness reflects Baxter's own struggle with religion and domestic life, and thus the poem, 'The Ballad of Calvary Street', gains more power. The film 'American Beauty' (1999), directed by Sam Mendes, views the issue of family life and superficiality through a quite different lens - and this slightly different perspective, as well as the powerful way in which the film uses cinematic conventions to convey its themes, also makes 'American Beauty' an intriguing text to analyse in the context of this issue. ' American Beauty' examines the life of Lester Burnham (Kevin Spacey), and analyses the verve and energy that Lester is able to gain after breaking free of the facade of family life. At the beginning of the film, Burnham is shown to be deeply unhappy.

His wife, Carolyn (Annette Bening), is a smiling, image-conscious real estate agent, and they share a nice house with a spacious garden adorned with roses and beautiful flowers; yet beneath the calm, shiny exterior of their lives, they have a rebellious daughter, Jane (Thora Birch), and a life that is certainly not bereft of problems. Burnham is disillusioned with his family, his job, and his life in general. He feels trapped in his routine life, and this is supported by a mid-shot of Lester at work, where he is framed in such a way so that, as he stands behind railings, he appears to be physically isolated, as if behind prison bars. Similarly to Baxter, the director Sam Mendes initially conveys the idea of domestic unhappiness through establishing the setting. The sweeping high angle shots that open 'American Beauty's how houses and gardens that appear impressive, but a closer look reveals withered trees and an arid landscape - aspects of life that perhaps symbolism the declining relationships on the inside of these houses. But whereas Baxter focused in 'The Ballad of Calvary Street' on the effect of maintaining a facade, Mendes concentrates more in 'American Beauty' on the advantages of discontinuing the facade and becoming more open and honest about domestic problems.

Mendes stresses this through the character development of Lester Burnham. Burnham decides, after meeting with Ricky, a young man who becomes his daughter's boyfriend, that he will no longer be inhibited by the constraints of conventional family life. He begins to smoke marijuana (which he buys from Ricky), resigns from his office job, and spends time at home attempting to physically improve himself by working out. The happiness that Lester attains is best exemplified in the scene in which Lester is driving down the road in the new car that he has bought having just left his job. Lester is presented in mid-shot, singing a song which is being played on the radio, and for once, he feels comfortable, and does not constrain his behaviour to conform with society's expectations. The song, "American Woman", consists of crashing guitars and an exciting, powerful tune that in some ways demonstrates the freedom that Lester now experiences.

Mendes also communicates the importance of disentangling one's life from the web of facades by using the motif of the colour red. At the beginning of the film, the red colour seems to represent everything that is superficial about the ideals of the American Dream - red is seen, for example in Carolyn's costume (which is significant at this point, for Carolyn is indeed the apotheosis of such shallow insincerity), and in the roses near Lester's house. But as the film wears on, the red motif changes to become a symbol of the honesty and sincerity that Lester acquires. Red as a colour becomes associated with positive aspects of Lester's life - the audience sees the red on Ricky's camera, and this links to the idea that Ricky's camera can capture all the "beauty in this world", and also on the petals that surround Lester's dream girl, Angela, as she bathes.

Finally, red is also seen when Lester dies where blood is shown spreading across the floor in close up. Although Lester's death is a somewhat sorrowful occurrence in the film, the red connects the death to ideas of beauty, honesty, and openness and indicates cleverly that Lester, upon his death, has at last truly broken free of the facade to attain some form of happiness. ' An Inspector Calls', a play (written by J.B. Priestley) performed at Circa Theatre in Wellington at the beginning of the 2005, also addresses the issue of facades and domestic disorder, and as a piece of live theatre, uses its own idiosyncratic approach to analyse the matters at stake. Priestley's play tells the story of the upper class Birling family, who hold an engagement party for Sheila Birling and her future husband, Gerald Croft, and find their celebrations ruined by the arrival of Inspector Goole (played by Bruce Philips).

Inspector Goole informs the family that there has been a recent suicide, and one by one, interrogates the members of the family, and in each case, forces them to believe that they are in some way culpable vis-'a-vis the suicide. Whilst 'American Beauty' looked at the release that can be gained from destroying a facade and Baxter's poetry explained the negative ramifications of attempting to maintain a facade, 'An Inspector Calls' investigates exactly how the concept of a facade crumbles when under pressure. The acting in the performance of Simon Vincent as Eric, the Birling parents' erratic young son, and Danielle Mason as Sheila, the soon-to-be married young woman, clearly illustrates the way that the thin veneer of respectability can be peeled away to reveal mistakes and secrets. Both characters begin the play maintaining under the pretense that they are ethical young people. However, after they have been interrogated by the inspector, it is discovered that Eric is an alcoholic and that Sheila, in fact, has no desire to marry Gerald Croft. At the start of the play, both actors speak clearly, with upper class gestures and postures, but by the end of the play, Eric and Sheila become a whimpering mass of tears and chaos.

In addition, the message about facades is also conveyed subtly through the set used at Circa Theatre. Suitably chairs and tables from the Victorian era fill the stage but perhaps more significantly, to the side of the stage there is a small pile of rubble. This debris shows firstly that the Birling family live in a society, pre-World War One, of "fire and blood and anguish" (as the inspector says in the play), for there was much technological advancement around this time and the suffragette movement was beginning to take shape. But the fragments of stone and rock off the stage also demonstrate that by the time the play's happenings have concluded, the Birling family have allowed their facade to be reduced to a pile of rubble; indeed, their true characters as human beings has been revealed. Such subtle communication of the play's messages adds another level to the play's proceedings, allowing the theatrical experience to become a more complex analysis of domestic life. Overall, Baxter's 'The Ballad of Calvary Street', Mendes' film 'American Beauty', and the Priestley play 'An Inspector Calls' all scrutinize the nature of domestic life, and the facades that are developed to hide the true problems of our society.

'The Ballad of Calvary Street' looks at the manner in which individuality and excitement are suppressed by the maintenance of such a facade, and emphasizes that domestic relationships are devoid of any spirituality or ethical framework. 'American Beauty' focuses on the advantages of breaking free from the constraints of the facade, and emphasizes the freedom and openness that can be achieved once the duties of the facade are forgone. 'An Inspector Calls' analyses the way a facade can crumble when there is pressure and confusion to reveal people who are not as respectable as they seem. The issue of facades is very relevant to our society, at a time when, in New Zealand at least, domestic abuse and divorce are still pernicious problems. The issue is often explored across a range of texts and could even be argued to be a clich'e in current times. However, the uncompromising and honest manner in which these texts address the issue makes the concept of facades so intriguing and fresh, and causes these texts to gain added power and impact.
