According to information provided by The American Nurses Association Website, ANA is a full-service association that represents 2.9 million RNs (registered nurses) through its 54 constituent member associations. ANA was created with several objectives in mind: to foster high standards of nursing practice, and to enhance general and economic welfare of registered nurses in the workplace. In order to protect RNs rights, ANA lobbies regulatory agencies and the Congress on health care issues concerning nurses and their work. ANA actively takes part in Nursing and Healthcare issues in the U.S. Congress and the Federal agencies. ANA undertakes all measures to advocate the interests of nurses, proposing corrections to government acts and other important documents. For example, according to ANAs Website, the Healthcare Truth and Transparency Act (H.R. 5688) was the first federal legislation resulting from the AMA efforts to limit scopes of practice of health care providers who are not physicians.
Among other actions ANA appeals to its members to support the Owens Amendment to provide nurses with better protection; Association asks the members of Congress to support $175 million in fiscal year 2007 funding for nursing workforce development, to co-sponsor S. 71 the Registered Nurse Safe Staffing Act of 2005 and H.R. 1372, the Quality Nursing Care Act of 2005, to acknowledge the Advanced practice registered nurses as providers under the Federal Employee Compensation Program (FEC A), etc. The American Nurses Association asserted the rights of nurses and gained a victory on The Health Insurance Marketplace Modernization and Affordability Act of 2005 - S. 1955. According to ANAs opinion, this Act could strip coverage that consumers have and depend on and raise the cost of insurance. ANA also supports Medicaid program concerning the coverage based on federal standards that ensures access for poor and special needs population. As a part of its protectionist policy, ANA asked the members of Congress to co-sponsor the Medicaid Advanced Practice Nurses and Physician Assistants Access Act (H.R. 2716 / S. 1515).
The New Jersey State Nurses Association (NJSNA) has the similar aim: to foster standards of nursing practice. NJSNA is a federation member member of ANA. NJSNA consists of professional nurses.
