Non Hawaiian Admittance Into Kamehameha Schools example essay topic

437 words
There is a change going on in the Kamehameha Schools system, for the first time since the school was founded in 1887 a non-Hawaiian is being admitted into the school. For the past 115 years we have upheld our founders will, but over time non Hawaiians feelings toward this admittance policy changed and a lot of them were outraged because this school doesn't permit their child to attend. They went to court, and in 2002 a child not of Hawaiian ancestry was admitted into the Kamehameha Schools Maui campus. Now in 2003 another non Hawaiian student was admitted into Kapalama Campus on O'ahu. One of the arguments that support non Hawaiian admittance into Kamehameha Schools is that it's discrimination among races.

Because Kamehameha Schools is one of the best schools in the world parents of non Hawaiian children are pushing for the schools system to change. They see all the opportunities Kamehameha Schools has to offer and want the same for their children. Now to state how I feel about this matter. It would be unfair to say that only Hawaiians are allowed into Kamehameha Schools. If they would just take a look at the children who attend this school, they would be surprised to see the different races here. There are Chinese, Portuguese, Fijian, German, Indian, etc. but the one thing students here have in common is that we all are of Hawaiian ancestry.

Anyone who truly respects our race and values what little we Hawaiians have left would keep Princess Pauahi's will. It was her wish to have a place for Hawaiian children to get an education. She saw that everything was being taken away from the Hawaiian people and that if she didn't set aside a place just for them, they would be left with nothing to call their own. In conclusion I think the way Kamehameha Schools handled this situation wasn't the best way.

They knew their policy and they still let that child in. They should " ve stood by Princess Pauahi's will and put their foot down and fought for what everyone knew was right. Kamehameha Schools motto is IMUA, to move forward. From what I see this isn't a form of IMUA. Twenty years from now we the Hawaiian people will be left with nothing to call their own.

Kamehameha Schools will be just like all DOE schools if they continue to take this path, there will be nothing special about this school. Princess Pauahi's legacy will be lost.
