In the beginning they extracted a special kind of wood, Pau Brasil, as they called it. Then it was time for the precious metals, like gold and silver. Together with this exploitation there was the expansion for the West, just like in the US. And in time Brazil's area became what it is today. In the 17th century the main product was sugar.
There were lots of farms of sugar, especially in the Northeastern part of Brazil. That was the time when Portuguese people brought African slaves to Brazil. The slaves worked hard in farms and were treated like animals. In the 18th century conflicts took place in Brazil.
Some claimed Independence. In 1808 (19th century) the Portuguese Royal family came to Brazil due to Napoleon's Continental Blockade in Europe. Conflicts increased and finally on September 7th, 1822 the Independence was declared by the king's son, D. Pedro I. He became the Emperor of Brazil. May 13th, 1888.
Slavery was abolished in Brazil. November 15th, 1889. Monarchy was abolished and gave way to the new Republic. In the beginning of the 20th Century the main product for exportation was coffee. At that time a lot of immigrants came to Brazil: Italian, German, Japanese, etc. By 1930 Brazil had there industrialization.
The industries were concentrated in the southeastern part of the country while the northeastern was still rural. In 1964 the militaries managed to be in control of the Government. This was the time of Brazil's political dictatorship. It lasted until 1987, when people claimed to vote for president (we were not allowed to vote for president, they chose the new president by themselves).
