Old Stone House example essay topic

It was a dark and stormy night. (I know that sounds corny, but it really was dark and stormy!) My friend and I were walking home from the game when it started to thunder, and lightening lit up the sky around us. It started to pour, so my friend suggested that we take a shortcut home by going down Washington Street. "No way!" I said.

My friend asked me if I was afraid. I was embarrassed, so I agreed to the shortcut. To this day, I wish I hadn't. You see, there were three things on that street that terrified me: The old cemetery, a haunted house, and an abandoned factory...

So we were nearing the old factory that closed down in the early 1900's. All of the windows were boarded up or barred and the doors were held shut with a locked chain. Besides the horrible appearance, there were equally disturbing stories that went along with it. The old people of town said that the old factory produced chemicals and that everyone that worked there died a mysterious and tragic death. All of the workers there would develop these horrible diseases or ended up in the insane asylum. Either way, they would end up dying.

One day when the workers were getting ready to leave there was a small chemical explosion that ended up killing all the workers. The building remained standing, but most of the windows were blown out and when the police went in to collect the bodies, they weren't any. They claimed that the bodies must have disintegrated. As we were walking by a cat ran up to the house and hid behind a tree. Allison went to go pet the cat when the cat suddenly jumped upon the window sill.

She walked over to pick it up when one of the remaining windows suddenly exploded out towards her. (It must have been then that she inhaled the remaining chemicals inside of the building) Both of us frightened, looked at each other and continued to run down the road. When we were finally out of breath, we stopped running. We turned around and all we could see was the faint shadow of the factory. In the distance, we could see a soft flashing of light that looked like it was hanging in mid-air. As we approached closer we realized that it was a house, so being out of breath we decided to take a rest out of the rain and sit on the porch.

Everything was fine so far until I looked over at the side of the house and I noticed what looked like blood was running down from the gutters. That's when I realized that this must be the house of Obula Give. Everyone said Obula's house was haunted, and since her death last year there have been even more stories. No one lived there now, but she had a daughter who she had left the house to. Her daughter had been trying to sell the house for the past year, but she couldn't find any buyers. Big, green vines swallowed up the old stone house making it appear dark and gloomy.

It looked as if no one was there, but we still saw flashing in the window. It looked like someone was upstairs in the house watching tv. Just then we saw a shadow turn a curtain aside and the outline of an old, hunched over woman stood in the window with glowing eyes. That's when we decided that maybe we didn't need to rest after all, and walked over to the street. As we were standing in the middle of the street we looked up again in the window, but no one was there and it appeared that there was nothing turned on inside the house. We were convinced that we must have only scared ourselves into thinking we saw these things.

"This is a pretty long road for a short cut", I said. "We " re almost home. We only have a little ways down the road to walk, and then through the cemetery", Allison answered. "Okay... ", I replied hesitantly. Cemeteries had always been scary to me, and I wasn't exactly thrilled at the idea of having to walk through one at night in a storm.

Allison suddenly bent over and started coughing. I went up to her and asked her if she was okay and she looked at me with this vindictive glare in her eyes and said I'm fine. As we were walking, I noticed a smear of blood on her lips. I asked her if she felt okay and she nodded and licked her lips. I was so worried about her being sick then, but I don't know how I didn't think something was wrong then. As we approached the cemetery I noticed that the street lights ended there and only cast light up till the entry.

The big metal gates were tall and rusted and were opened only enough to allow us to pull them open. We both grabbed on and it made a loud squeaking noise. I grabbed Allison's arm and we walked in. It was so dark inside, and the little light that we did have was what moonlight the tall trees permitted to shine through. As we walked through I noticed all the old, broken tombstones. Most of them looked like they were going to fall over like the other ones that already lay on the ground.

Just then we heard footsteps behind us. We began to walk faster and faster when suddenly the footsteps stopped. We turned around and there stood a huge dog with sharp, jagged teeth and red, beady eyes. It snarled at us and we began to slowly back away, but the dog kept creeping towards us. Finally, we turned around and ran until we tripped over something and fell on the ground. We looked up and saw that we had finally gotten out of the cemetery and the big gates lay just behind us.

That's when a big gust of wind came through and slammed the gates shut. That basically ended our night. That night was the last time that I saw Allison. I called her a few weeks later and her mother told me that she had to go away for a while and hung up. Even though she told me that, I've heard stories that say otherwise.

After that night, people say that she went crazy and that now she lives in the insane asylum a few towns over. Some people might think that she just went crazy, but me, I know the real reason why. Regardless, lets just say that now I definitely believe the stories about the old chemical factory.
