History of Olympics The Olympic games originated in ancient Greece they were held from 776 B. C to A. D 393. The modern games started in 1896. The organizers revived the games to encourage world peace, friendship and to promote healthy sporting competition for the youth of the world. The Olympic games consist of summer and winter games, and are held every four years. Colorful ceremonies and thrilling athletic events give the specialty to the Olympics. The opening events are always particularly impressive. The Olympic athletes of Greece march into the stadium first, in honor of the original games held in ancient Greece. The most dramatic moment of the opening is the lighting of the Olympic torch. The flame symbolizes the light of sprit, knowledge, life and messenger of peace. Most runners carry the flame when they are on foot. However, many types of transportation is also used, including airplanes, horses, and skis. The final runner carries the torch into the stadium, circles the track, and lights a huge caldron (kettle).
The flame burns throughout the show and is extinguished during the closing ceremony. The Olympic symbol, created in 1913, consist of five interlocking rings, that represents the continents of Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, and the Americas. The colors of the rings left to right are blue, yellow, black, green and red. The flag of every team competing as at least one of these colors. Under the rigs is a motto, the latin words of Cities, Altus, and Forties, that are translated as swifter, higher and stronger.
