One Child Policy example essay topic

When women dream of settling down and making a family of their own, they think about how many children they would like to have. Some like small families containing only one or two children, while others enjoy really big families with four or five children. Here in America, women have the right to give birth to as many children as we want or can physically have. Other country's such as China is not that fortunate when it comes to women giving birth. Since China is the most over populated country, in 1979 they created the one child policy, only allowing women to give birth to one child to try and cut down the population growth. In many towns in China they have people that are called the 'family planners' who come to women's houses every day to remind them to take their birth control and not to have more than one child.

When even thinking about having a baby, women who work in factories have to ask permission to try and get pregnant. If a woman does get pregnant for the second time while working in a factory, they get their bonus taken away. The most crazy part about this policy to me is that women are getting persuaded left and right to have abortions. I am against abortions, so I think it's horrible that women are getting pressured into having an abortion when they should have the right to be happy with another child. In the video about China's only child policy, they mentioned a woman that got persuaded into having an abortion, she escaped the hospital still pregnant, was searched for, found, and was still forced to have the abortion. I feel that by finding her and forcing her to still take the abortion is not right and is pushing the lines.

It's one thing to suggest only having one child, but when it comes to forcing a woman to change her mind, its wrong no matter what the purpose is. Personally, I feel that a woman should have the right to make up her own mind about how many children she should have. I would feel exposed and not comfortable if there was a woman coming to my house everyday making sure that im taking my birth control pills. Also, I don't think that it's fair for factories to not give women their bonuses if they have earned it, just because they got pregnant for the second time. When I first heard of this one child policy, I was so confused as to why they could pass this law. Since China does have a population issue, I do understand that the people in china are thinking ahead for the future and what the population will be like in 50 years, but I feel that there could be some other resort instead of only allowing one child per family.

I think that having brothers and sisters help kids learn from one another and have another connection with someone other than friends or parents. On the other side, I guess there isn't really a different way to stop the population growth. It is a logical way to cut down on birth rates and it can help the use of land to produce food for the population and homes for families. It has been said that if the one child policy is followed for the coming years, that the food rate will double what it is now, and families will be able to give their child more than what they could if they had more than one child. Every family will have a 'double living standard' and many people will be very happy. If the policy is not kept and the population reaches about 15 billion, the country will be in total poverty and it will be hard to climb back to the top after falling that low.

Since looking at the statistics, China does need to be careful for the future because if they weren't being concerned right now, it could be totally over populated and they would be stuck not knowing what to do. In 2000, the policy has been more relaxed and couples are now allowed to have two children. The total population is about 1.26 billion, and would have been 1.6 without the one child policy and the population growth controlled was 26% in 1970 and 8.8% in 2000 which is a big change. Also, the average life span has increased for both males and females which is at about 70 right now. Since the policy started in 1979 a lot has changed for the better in China..
