Grasping and understanding the fundamentals and theories that lie behind management would be difficult to master for even the most successful business manager. Capturing the key elements and using them in a positive and forward moving manner is the key to success. In this paper I will go over the four functions of management which are planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. Taking a close look at the Organization I work for, breaking down daily tasks into these four functions should be a somewhat simple, well this was my initial thought anyways. I have always looked at management from the "chain of command" point of view deriving from the few years I spent in the U.S. Navy. In my current job I tend to try and fit management duties into the Military mold which never seems to fit just right.

Working in the Computer Technology field planning is essential. Without the proper outline and layout you can get yourself into a situation that would be impossible to back out of, and most of the time would cost a great deal of money to go back and fix. When I am given a project to take care of, I sit down with a blank word document and start typing down ideas pertaining to the task at hand. The next step would be to break down this list into groups that contain data that relates with one another. The third step taking each group and breaking each group into steps and sorting them in the order they need to be completed. If this project was given to me by my supervisor I would then get feedback from them on what I have so far.

I would continue this process until we have a final plan laid out and ready to go. As you can see planning is the base that stabilizes all tasks and projects keeping them running smoothly. Organization and planning kind of go hand in hand with each other. Having a good organized plan will always work out to be a good thing and on the same note having a good plan will most likely lead into a very organized plan. Now that we have a plan in place here is where we would assign duties to individuals. If this were a larger project I would break up individuals into teams and assign a leader to each team, thus creating a chain of command and keeping the project organized.

As a supervisor I would also have to keep on top of the flow of the project and analyze how the groups are doing to ensure organization stays intact. A successful manager would have to be a great leader as well. What is a great leader? A leader is someone who keeps their subordinates on track, and boosts morale when they are down on themselves. Keeping focused on the entire organizations "end" goal at all times and molding the employees towards that goal. Leading also falls upon certain other individuals, taking my organization for example I may be given a project from my supervisor and I will need to lead my coworkers down the proper path to get this project completed.

So as you can see being a leader does not just fall on the Supervisor at times it may fall upon project leaders or other individuals within a company or organization. So how does a leader obtain the goals they have set for themselves? What steps need to be taken to keep on the track to success? This is where controlling comes into play.

Setting standards and guidelines that employees must follow keeps them on track. Performance reviews are also a way to help employees know where they stand with the supervisor allowing them to know what they need to change to improve their work habits. Managing conflicts that may arise among peers would be another aspect of controlling. Overall controlling your organization or workplace will prevent chaos from arising and taking over. We have briefly taken a look at the four aspects of successful management and how they may apply to some work environments. As you can see, as I have being a manager may not be as easy as it seems to appear to be sometimes.

I have been given many tasks and projects within my workplace that I have to plan, organize, lead, and control from the start all the way to the finish. Reading up on management theory I now look at management issues at a different angle and will try to implement these four processes whenever possible in the future.
