Is the death penalty wrong? Is the death penalty right? Many people have different views on this subject because of their beliefs. Its very hard to say if capital punishment is necessary, but without it we would say, "that man needs to die for the crime he committed". John McAdams from the University of Marquette's political science department once said, 'If we execute murderers and there is in fact no deterrent effect, we have killed a bunch of murderers. If we fail to execute murderers, and doing so would in fact have deterred other murders, we have allowed the killing of a bunch of innocent victims".

Its very hard to let a man walk away from his death, because we want justice served. You would know that capital punishment is wrong by putting yourself ina death row inmates shoes, and saying to yourself "I don't want to die", and "I'm sorry". In the Catechism of the Catholic Church it states that, "Certain particularly grave sins incur excommunication, the most severe ecclesiastical penalty, which impedes the reception of the sacraments and the exercise of certain ecclesiastical acts, and for which absolution consequently cannot be granted, according to canon law, except by the Pope, the bishop of the place or priests authorized by them. In danger of death any priest, even if deprived of faculties for hearing confessions, can absolve from every sin and excommunication" (1463).

The Catechism of the Catholic Church also says that, "Sins can be distinguished according to their objects, as can every human act; or according to the virtues they oppose, by excess or defect; or according to the commandments they violate. They can also be classed according to whether they concern God, neighbor, or oneself; they can be divided into spiritual and carnal sins, or again as sins in thought, word, deed, or omission. The root of sin is in the heart of man, in his free will, according to the teaching of the Lord: 'For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, fornication, theft, false witness, slander. These are what defile a man. ' But in the heart also resides charity, the source of the good and pure works, which sin wounds (1853). The article, which is from the magazine "The National Review" tells about how we treat the people on death row, the argument for and against capital punishment, and how Europe thinks as us as savage and primitive beings, who punish by murder.

According to the article a few days before a convict is sent to his death we give him or her harsh treatment by cutting he or she off from the rest of the world. We do not let them talk to their families, they cannot watch television, and we do not let them read books. The statements believed are hogwash. The convict is allowed to counsel with family, and friends, and does not leave his execution quarter till about six hours before the execution. Europe believes our country as savage for capital punishment. They believe our President "leads the charge of the death brigade".

Many country's do not believe in capital punishment, but in our country the majority of the people say we need capital punishment. The Catholic Church has no support for the death penalty what so ever. Just about all religious scholars agree that the correctly translated commandment 'Thou shalt not murder' is not allowed against individual cases of murder. There is no biblical prohibition against the government imposing the death penalty in deserving cases.

This leads us to the debate of whether capital punishment is right or whether is wrong. Frankly I cannot tell you, because I do no know if there is a correct or an incorrect answer to the question. It is what you believe and how you feel on the subject. As stated above the church does not approve of it and I am not a big supporter of it.
