Disciplining a child is a very controversial thing. The type of discipline that parents use is entirely up to them, but 90% Of parents admit to have spanking their children as a form of discipline. On the other hand 10% of parents say it is entirely wrong to lay a finger on a child. However, spanking shouldn't be confused with beating.

Spanking refers to firm pats with an open hand on a child's rear-end using a reasonable amount of force. Beating your child would be using a belt, stick or strap which can lead bruises, broken bones, internal bleeding and maybe even death. Some parents believe just talking to a child after that have done something wrong is not enough so they use spanking to show the child the difference between right and wrong. When a child does something wrong most of the time just telling them not to do it again won't work, you have to take it step further. Just talking to the child is a mild punishment, if you show the child physically (spanking) then they are most likely to listen. Putting your foot down for the child's own safety won't do any harm.
