Ernest Hemingway is my favourite writer. So, I'll tell some words about E.H. He was born in 1899 in On Park near Chicago, he lived not very long, but his life was very interesting. He died in 1961 in Ketchum. Since his childhood he was interesting in literature and he started writing his first short stories when he attended school. E.H. took part in the First World war.

After the war he worked as corespondent, but soon he made up his mind to became a writer. His first novel was "FIESTA'. It was the beginning of his successful literature career. This novel was followed by "A FAREWELL TO ARMS', which brought him a fame. E.H. was a man of action. He took part in all events that took place in the World's life. After the Spanish Civil war he wrote the novel "FOR WHOM THE BELL TOOLS'.

He got into the Second World War as a war corespondent. Some time past and E.H. published his book "ACROSS THE RIVER AND INTO THE TREES'. For the short novel "THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA', the writer got the Publisher's and the Nobel prizes for literature. It's a great pity, but it was one of last his works. The main theme of his books is man in the face of violence.

Maybe it is the reason why he is so attractive and popular. Copyrights belongs to Darius Varanavicius THE SEASONS OF THE YEAR There are four seasons in a year. They are spring, summer, autumn, and winter. Every season is beautiful and pleasant in its own way. Spring is a wonderful season. Spring comes and nature awakens from its winter sleep.

The days become longer and nights shorter. The ground is covered with fresh green grass and the first spring flowers. The trees are covered with new leaves and blossoms. The air is fresh and sun shines brightly. Spring months are March, April and May. Summer months are June, July and August.

The weather is usually fine in summer. It is much warmer than in spring. The trees are green and the gardens are full of flowers. Everybody enjoys summer. A lot of people have their holidays in summer.

They can go swimming and boating, they can lie in the sun and get sunburnt, they can gather berries and mushrooms. Autumn months are September, October and November. The days become shorter and the nights become longer. The weather often changes, and it gets colder and colder.

The sky is often grey and cloudy, often rains. Autumn is harvesting time, the time when grain, fruit and vegetables become ripe. Winter months are December, January and February. Sometimes it is very cold (30 degrees or more below zero). It often snows. Winter is a good time for sport.

Little children are fond of playing snowballs and making snowmen, older ones go in for skating and skiing. In Britain traditions play a more important part in the life of the people than in others countries. The Englishmen are proud of their traditions and carefully keep them up. It has been the law for about 300 years that on Sundays all the theatres are closed, no letters are delivered and only a few Sunday papers are published. The main holidays are Christmas Day, Boxing Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Spring Bank Holiday and Late Summer Bank Holiday. All the public holidays except Christmas and Boxing Day (on December 25th and 26th) are movable. Good Friday and Easter Sunday which falls on the first Sunday after a full moon on or after March 21st. The Spring Bank Holiday falls on the last Monday of May while the Late Bank Holiday comes on the last Monday in August.

Besides public holidays there are other festivals, anniversaries and simply days. For example Pancake Day, St. Valentine's Day (Feb. 14), Guy Fawkes Day (Nov. 5), the run of old motorcars. January 1st or New Year's Day is one of the most popular holidays in the world. People do not go to bed until after midnight on December 31st.

They like to see "the old year out and the new year in'. A lot of parties are given on New Year's Eve in England. Christmas is more widely celebrated than New Year's Day. Germanic languages derive from a common "ancestor' language which we call Indo-European. At the beginning of the Christian era English was not a separate language but simply one of dialects of the common Germanic language of Europe. The development of Old English as a separate language began around the middle of the 5th century. After the invasion of the British Isles by the Angles and Saxons.

During the next two or three centuries these tribes conquered most of England and Scotland. The language of them was Celtic. Englishmen borrowed words "right' and "left', especially from the classical languages (Greek and Latin), and from French and Italian. This has made the vocabulary of English perhaps the largest of any language and has produced a rich store of synonyms from different linguistic sources (for example, "royal' from Old French, "kingly' a Germanic word, "regal' from Latin, all meaning "kartli kas'). English is spoken all over the world. There are some difference between the English of Europe and that of the USA.

These differences are in dictionary, pronunciation and in the meaning of some words (for example the word "underground' (metro) in American-English is called "subway', an Americans goes to the movies and Englishmen goes to the picture or to the cinema). Differences in dictionary can be explained by turning to American history. The Americans borrowed words from those languages with which the English speaking colonists came into contact on the American continent: American Indian, French, Spanish. There are a number of differences in spelling: for example Englishmen write "colour', Americans write "color'. English – "metre' and Americans – "meter'. Lithuania has her own famous people too. I would like to speak about the great Lithuanian painter and musician M.K. +ciurlionis. Mykalojus Konstantin as Ciurlionis (1875 – 1911) a talented son of the Lithuanian people outstanding painter and composer. The name of Ciurlionis, is today mentioned in a number of works in various countries. Born in the hilly land of Dzukija, full of lakes and pinewoods, Ciurlionis while still a child loved deeply the soft beauty of his mother-country – its colours and sounds held ideas and deep meaning for him.

Ciurlionis too short life – he died at the early age of thirty-five – was very active; he painted over 300 pictures. Ciurlionis was a pioneer of Lithuanian symphonic music and created our first symphonic poems, sonatas, and many works for piano, choir and organ. The greater part of the art of Ciurlionis is devoted to that which is so near and dear to us Lithuanian nature, her fairy-tales and her beauty. Perhaps the idea of the beauty of the mother-country Lithuania is expressed most vividly in Fairy-tales of Kings – the famous picture of the painter – where in the dark forest two great rulers of legend meet; they look in wonder miracle! On the hand of the elder appears a shining bow of light – in it, - a Lithuanian village! We can see the deepest feeling for the nature of his own land and art in his great musical works ' In The Forest' and ' The Sea'.
