To obtain peace, there are two methods. The first is to have both sides battle each other until one finally defeats the other. This option is not available because it leads to many unnecessary deaths and can never have an absolute resolution; it is very violent and bloody. The second is more favorable. Through education, one can reach peace through non-violent means. To see how education can beget peace one must look at the cause of these conflicts. People hate each other. Their reasons for hating each other are superficial, let it be color of their skin, religion, sexual preference, for one reason or the other they hate each other. They don't hate each individual, yet they hate the group as a whole. This is prejudice. They don't know the true reason for their hatred, but they hate nonetheless. Prejudice is created because of the people's ignorance.
They don't know any better. And the best means to cure ignorance is, of course, education. Once people are educated, hopefully, they will realize that their hatred is only artificial. Education will cause people to no longer fear the unknown because it has become, basically, known.
Yet, one might think that diplomacy will lead to peace. But this peace is temporary. It does not solve the root of the problem. People are forced to co-exist, and when someone is forced to do something, they will not accept it.
Then, you wonder, how is one supposed to educate people who are unwilling to learn? The answer is simple, you cannot. To force knowledge into people's mind will only cause then to reject it, and lead to further hatred. But, do not consider humanity to be doomed. There are people out there who are willing to learn. It is our job, to find these people and teach them.
Teach them everything we can. Once, educated they will realize that their hatred was superficial. If they do not realize this, they will perpetuate the hatred. Let's there are more people out there who are willing to learn and let go of their hatred, then those who are closed-minded and unwilling to learn.
