He was in the First Battalion of the of the Royal Scots and served four years. He started off doing basic training at Glencoure and then moved to the First Battalion Munster in Germany, where he stayed for two years. During this time he joined the regiment football team and pipe band and so was able to travel all over Europe. He then moved back to Edinburgh and spent some time as a Royal Guard, as well as a palace guard at Holyrood and a castle guard at Edinburgh Castle.
Thomas also played the tenner drums in the 1979 Berlin Tattoo at Edinburgh Castle. Near the end of his army career he went on a four month tour of Ireland in West Belfast, which was the time he liked least. While he was in the army his dad divorced his mum and they have hardly spoken since. On the 3rd September 1982, when Thomas was twenty-three years old he married Lynda For gie who was a student nurse from Forth, a small town near Breich.
Two years later when their first daughter helen was born, he became a Prison Warden in shots prison, but transferred to Peterhead prison about a year later just before his second daughter, andrea, was born on the 2nd of October 1985. During his time in Peterhead he was involved in many riots, which made him decide to transfer again to Polmont in 1989 just after his third daughter Jean was born, five years after Heather. In Polmont he decided to become a chef within the prison service. He transferred twice to Peterhead and finally to Cortonvale where after seventeen years he left the prison service. Thomas is currently working for a catering company called Sco obie and Macintosh as a sales man.
He still lives in Tullibody with his wife and two youngest daughters, Andrea, who is a hairdresser and Jean who is still at school. His eldest daughter now lives and attends university in Glasgow.
