Petruchio's And Katherine's Marriage example essay topic

The Taming of he Shrew In The Taming of the Shrew is not so much the result of love but rather society that people are expected to take part in. As a result of the removal of romance from marriage, suitors are judged, not by their love for a woman, but by how wealthy they are and how much money they have. All suitors compare the dowry each can bring to the marriage and the one with the most to offer 'wins' the woman's hand in marriage. This competition for marriage is basically a game.

In the game, however, women are treated like objects that can be bought and sold rather than as human beings. When the story begins Katherine is portrayed as a shrew. She is disliked by everyone including her father. She is rude and insulting and in my opinion she does this to get the attention that she missed and to seek revenge against people who torture her. Her father tires to bring her under control, but fails. Once Petruchio meets Katherine, he is impressed with her spirit and realizes it will take much effort to bring her under control.

When Petruchio marries Katherine, he is determined to tame her. He treats her rudely, just how she treated other people so he can see how she became a shrew. After a while she realizes that Petruchio is mocking her and realizes how cruel she was and starts to change. She becomes a kind and loving wife by the end of the story.

If it wasn't for Petruchio Katherine would have never changed in my opinion. Bianca is beautiful and witty therefore, she has many suitors. She does not follow her fathers advice and falls in love with Lucentio. She defies her father and marries him.

She was never a obedient wife. When ever Lucentio calls her she always says that she is too busy to come to him. In my opinion I think that Petruchio's and Katherine's marriage is better, because even though Katherine is a shrew he tires to change her and succeeds at it and Bianca turns out to be a bigger shrew than Katherine because she thinks just because she has many suitors she can treat people any way she can. Even though Petruchio was mean to Katherine, for example when she was tossed off her horse into the mud he refuses to help her, tells her she cannot heat or sleep and he complains about everything just as Katherine did in the past. His extreme rudeness to Kate had its purpose. He planned to change his wife by showing her how she acted in the past.

Although he was cruel to Kate he did it for her own good. Petruchio must have real compassion for Kate or else he would have never went through all that trouble to tame his wife. On the other had, Bianca had many suitors such as Hortensio, and Gre mio whom all fell in love with her. She disobeys her husband at the end of the story, which Kate never did and it proves that Petruchio's marriage is going to last longer than Bianca's. In conclusion I think that Petruchio's and Kate's marriage is going to last longer and is better because there love for each other and how one person can change another over the course of time.
