This book takes place during the late 1800's and is a story about a confused child and his struggles though out life. It is broken down into three different stages. As the novel opens, Pip (main character) is wandering amongst his parents' tombstones in which he confronts an escaped convict. This criminal threatens Pip and tells him that in order for him to have his life spared, Pip has to bring him a metal file and food. Pip does so and the convict is grateful for his obedience. A few nights later, the police catch the criminal but Pip does not reveal to anyone what happened between the two of them.

A few weeks later Pip is instructed by his sister, Mrs. JoeGargery, (Pip's guardian) to go to Miss Havisham's house. This lady is a very weird and strange person. Her fianc'e left her at the alter and she has hated men ever since. Her house is filled with wedding stuff that is molded and dust-covered because it has not been touched in 30 years. When Pip to Miss Havisham's house, he meets Estella. Miss Havisham's adopted daughter was taught to hate men and to never fall in love.

Estella is very beautiful and Pitfalls in love with her at first sight. However, she does not love him because she has been taught otherwise. Overtime, Pip begins to fell ashamed of his uncommon life and wants to seek a richer, more interesting life. So Pip spends the next few years of his life at the forge where his Uncle Joe, who is a black smith, works. While working he receives a surprise visit from a lawyer, named Mr. Jaggers, who tells him that he has 'great expectations' from a secret benefactor. This means that someone will pay Pip to learn how to be a gentleman.

This gets Pip very excited. At first Pip thinks that the benefactor in Miss Havisham because he thinks that he is being groomed into a gentleman so he can someday marry Estella. The next stage begins with Pi going off to London to become a gentleman. He gets an apartment and lives with Herbert Pocket. In London Pip gets tutored, and learns exactly what it takes to become a gentleman.

However, he still is curious on who his secret benefactor is. He goes to Mr. Jaggers to uncover the mystery but the lawyer will not give him a clue. Pip later receivers a letter from Estella explaining that she is in Paris, and she would be happy to see him. Pip not seeing her for years instantly falls back in love with her but in disappointed to see that she is with someone else. Pip promises himself he will not wound his heart like that again. He goes on with his life and continues to seek out his place in the world.

A few weeks later, he receives a letter from Joe telling him that his sister (Mrs. Joe) died. He returns home and attends his sister's funeral. When he returns to his home in London, he encounters Estella and she tells him that he is the only man that she has never 'lead on' or " played' with. However, he does not take her words to heart and still insists that she is trying to hurt him. In the last chapter of this stage, the benefactor comes to Pip's apartment. Pip recognizes him as the old, dirty convict in the marshes when he was a younger kid.

Magwitch tells Pip that he is his secret benefactor, and that the money his giving him was earned while he was living in Australia. Pip, at this point, is very surprised and confused by the incident. In the final stage, Magwitch finds himself to be impressed with Pip's progress as a gentleman. He reveals to Pip his life story that included another convict by the name of Compeyson. He is the man who left Miss Havisham at the altar and got Magwitch a life sentence. Pip learns that Magwitch is still a convict and is being hunted by the authorities.

Compeyson is spying on all of Pip's activities and looking to find Magwitch so that he will be hung. Pip and his roommate, Herbert, try to get Magwitch out of the country, so they take a boat and start rowing down a river. Compeyson follows them, along with four policemen. Magwitch realizes that Compeyson is with she goes into the water and grabs him out of the boat and the two struggle in the water. In this showdown, Compeyson drowns and Magwitch is hurt badly. Magwitch is then taken by the authorities and will be hung in a few days.

While Magwitch is in jail and very sick, Pip grows close to him and takes care of him. Magwitch turns into a father figure for Pip that he had never really had but he dies a day later. After this Pip becomes very ill and Joe comes to visit him. The story concludes with Pip going back to Miss Havisham's, who died a few years earlier. There he is surprised to find Estella who is now a widow. Furthermore, at the end of the story, the two take a long walk together and discover how both of their lives have changed drastically.
