The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, is an over the edge masterpiece set in the small modest village of Salem, Massachusetts around the 17th century. This is a drama of emotion, power, and continuous consequences that are created by a few young girls just dancing the woods and a manipulative teenager known as Abigail Williams who takes playtime just a bit to far. Abigail contains various characteristics to use to her advantage during the ingenious play. She makes use of her unique lying abilities, smooth vengeance, and remorseful control to gain respect with those who surround her. As tensions run haywire, she accuses many of the town's innocent citizens of witchcraft to get what she desires. As suspense and relentless hysteria rises, accusations multiply to consume the entire town of Salem as Abby's dynamic character never acts to rest.

The base of all the chaos is coming from a young, seventeen year-old women, who goes by he name of Abby. She holds in her hands a deceitful plan to rain vengeance and get what she wants which is the heart of John Proctor, but there are some people standing in her way. Nobody suspects a thing or even thinks twice of what hidden agenda this quiet girl has on her mind. She will not stop at anything to have John Proctor even if it leads to murder. Abigail is infatuated with the man and keen on taken his wife's place. ("You did, you did!

You drank a charm to kill John Proctor's wife! You drank a charm to kill Goody Proctor!" p. 19 Betty) Abigail will even go lengths as far as even hurting herself. She stabs and punctures her own flesh so she can accuse Goody Proctor of witchery. If Goody Proctor is suspected of witchcraft the penalty is certainly death. ("Why look at my leg.

I'm holes all over from their damned needles and pins... The jab your wife gave me is not healed yet, y'know". p. 149) This heartless devil will do anything at this point and will prove to be a true key in the play. Although this girl is very resourceful and highly mischievous she is dangerously intelligent. She holds in her hands the power and control of most of the people in Salem. In order to maintain security and keep high suspicions of her as distant as possible of witchery she must empower and spread fear into the eyes of those who know. ("I will come to you in he black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you...

I can make you wish you never seen the sun go down!" p. 20) Abigail contains unique methods of convincing acting, lying her way out of tight circumstances and uncomfortable situations. As the blame and fingers point towards her, Abby extricates herself from the awkward situation and promotes her ends by being untruthful and subterfuge. ("I never sold myself I'm a good girl! I'm a proper girl!

She made me do it! She made Betty do it!" p. 43) Looking at this quote by Abigail, she throws the accusations off her shoulder's onto Tit uba, a Negro slave of Reverend Parris. ("Sometimes I wake and find myself standing in he open doorway and not a stitch on my body! I always hear her laughing in my sleep. I hear her singing her Barbados songs and tempting me with... ". p. 44) Abby will have no sorrow if she has to pitch the guilt onto someone else to save her own piteous self. At this rate, the control and power she holds over the girls of Salem seems endless and unstoppable.

As the town goes straight downhill and things take a twist of events, innocent people hang or otherwise. Strangers with families are being ridiculed and tortured, teased to the point of confession. Abigail's main goal is to have Goody Proctor permanently erased from John Proctor's life, but the roles were switched right in front of her very eyes. ("I have never dreamed any of this for you... ". FILM) The one thing she had not dreamed of was to have Proctor hurt or involved in any way, but there was nothing she could do about it.

In defense of his wife, Proctor tries to give his life to save his name and others. These change of events make Abigail run away from Salem. She chooses the easy way out and runs from her mistakes, her past, and her regrets. ("There is news, sir, that the court must reckon with. My niece, sir, my niece-I believe she has vanished". p. 126 Rev. Parris) We think of these actions and outrageous events in The Crucible to be unthinkable in our times. The events that took place and actions by Abigail proved that nobody can hide from the suspicions of the court no matter who you are.

If you had been suspected of witchery, you had little or no chance of proving that you were in God's arm's instead of Lucifer's. Many people die at the knee of the gibbet in the play who pray that those who knew them wouldn't look down at them in shame on the church door as John had felt after he confessed. Abby corrupts the town of Salem for the time she spoke at the trials. She proves once and for all that the fear of the devil can push the envelope so far as to where a whole community of people can have there lives changed forever by a single person. Her anger and power pushed the limits of humanity.

Forever time and barriers were broken.
