Poem In Class example essay topic
My favorite poem that was read in class this week was Barbie Doll. Though I enjoyed the discussion we had on this poem in class, I felt that we could have gone further into the roles of men and women in society. In class, we didn't discuss how the author had personality characteristics that are considered traditionally male and therefore unattractive for females to possess, such as strength and intelligence. These ideals may be dwindling today, so that may be one reason the topic was overlooked in the discussion. The poem that I had the most trouble with was Soliloquy of a Spanish Cloister. I had a hard time trying to analyze this poem, not because of any hidden meanings, but just because of the style of language it was written in.
After we analyzed it as a class, though, I thoroughly enjoyed the poem. We also read love poem and Leaving the Motel. These poems had a common theme, which was love, but the tone of each poem was very different. The tone of love poem was very frantic and passionate, while Leaving the Motel was more sullen and sad.
English isn't usually my favorite class because I've had some bad experiences with English teachers in the past, but as a subject in general I enjoy it. I enjoy writing opinionated essays rather than fiction simply because I feel that I am better at the first. I don't know if we " ll be writing anything fictional this year, but I wouldn't mind doing so as to improve my skills. I know we will be doing a lot of literary analysis this year, which I am worried about because last year my English teacher was not very fond of any of my writing on that. After getting the first timed essay from this year back, though, I am less concerned because I didn't put much thought into that but came out with a decent grade. I think a lot of my grade from last year depended on the relationship I had with the teacher, which obviously was unpleasant.
This year I either hope to get off on the right foot with Mr. Clifford or I hope he will grade papers neutrally, not just automatically give A's to his favorite students.
