Envy is used as a principal theme for the play Othello, written by William Shakespeare. Due to its literary significance, Othello is being performed as a live show at the Stanley theatre on Sept 25. Although the play holds a deep and spiritual meaning, it does not seize the audience's interest with unsuitable costumes for certain characters and limited stage properties for important scenes, as well as poor acting techniques of the main actor. Philip Akin who plays Othello, is not convincing in the role. Because Othello is portrayed as a masculine and proud general under Shakespeare's quill pen, the moor usually speaks with an intense tone when he is angered. Unfortunately, the actor has failed to captivate the audience with intense emotions in some provoked scenes.
For instance, Othello tends to become extremely agitated while demanding Iago for ocular proofs of Desdemona's unfaithfulness, yet, Akin's tone of voice weakly conveys the anxiety and jealousy that he is suppose to express. Despite the lack of emotions, the physical appearance of Philip Akin fails to match Othello's imagery either. Since Akin is tall and thin, he is not muscular enough to be considered as an eloquent and physically powerful figure. Thus, the role of the tragic hero is poorly performed by Philip Akin.
