The purpose of this paper is to analysis the performance of 2 flutes by David Gerry and Cheryl Gobbet ti-Hoffman. Specifically, by examining what's my feeling of the music and performance. In the lunch time concert, there are four songs performed, including To Invoke the Clouds, ruing the edge, Litany for the whale and Piece in the shape of a Square. Flute is in the aerophone family of which the sound is created from air vibrations, and it is considered by most ethno musicologists to be the first instrument about 30,000 years old. Because of this assignment, I've been studying a lot about the history and mythology of the flute lately, and it makes me more interested in this instrument surprisingly. In this paper, I will talk about my expectations and the actual performance in general.

Why I supposed the concert in that way and what is it really to be. Furthermore, I will also examine the biographical and historical information about the composers and the music to see if we can get some ideas of the composers when they were writing these songs, from which we can more understand the variation of the element, for example, melody; tempo; timbre and texture. For the preparation of the 2 flutes performance, I read some articles about the history and construction of the flutes. The flute changed in construction and the material to meet the needs of the player continuously, in which the history of the flute can mainly to be divided into five periods: The Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, and modern. In the middle Ages, the transverse flute was not popular in Europe initially, but was widely known after introducing by Byzantine Empire. In Renaissance, the flute became much better-known all over Europe in the 14th century as Swiss mercenaries, who used it for marching and signaling, spread its use along with their new infantry techniques.

In Baroque, the new flute became known in England and Germany in the early 18th century. The first solo music for flute and basso continuo was published around 1700. In Germany and Italy especially, flutists began to write studies for the flute in all 24 keys, rather than in the restricted range of tonalities or modes it had used before. In classical, a new and more brilliant style of flute-playing appeared after about 1750 as the concerto and the symphony became the most popular musical forms.

Instrument makers in London first added keys to the baroque flute and increased its bore taper, both with the aim of strengthening the instrument's low register. In modern, the modern flute descends from inventions made in 1832 and 1847. And I believe the development of flute will going on, the new key-systems will be invented; new materials will be used and new melody will be performed.
