Sean Feuchte SS#: 1564 Humanities paper 10/29/03 I. Knowledge of Proper Social Behavior Knowledge of proper social behavior is a definite skill for anyone who desires to be successful in any career they pursue. It doesn't matter what field you work in or what dream you chase, you will have to talk, deal, and build relationships with people along the way. How you treat these people and how you act around them will be the difference between mediocrity and excellence. It can be the very thing that gets you just enough edge to get that job or promotion. It can also simply be the legacy and the attitude you live by.

The Bible speaks many times about excellence and teaches that we should always pursue it with all we have. We are a generation that is called to excellent. How can a businessman expect to be excellent in his corporate decisions, a teacher excellent in his teachings, or a pastor be excellent in sheppard ing his flock if he cannot even sit down to eat a dinner without eating like a slob and babbling on in utter nonsense? We are called to a higher standard and excellence starts with the small things first. If we master the small things, then God will give us much. We must be excellent in our social behavior and dealings with people before we can expect to be given greater responsibilities.

Everyone knows that as soon as success hits and you are involuntarily placed up on a high pedestal, people will begin to watch every breath you take. It is at these times that your social skills and things you learned earlier will shine through and you will be without fault in the smallest of things. If you do not have excellence already in these small things, then you will be exposed and people will begin to see your lack of consistency. In order to be the best witness to the world, we must first learn how to interact in a professional manner. II.

Diplomatic Protocol Diplomatic Protocol is one of the most important social skills to learn in the world today. It is especially important to learn about diplomatic protocol if you desire to get into politics or make an impression to important people. Protocol is a set of proper behaviors or etiquette. Diplomatic protocol more specifically, is a set of behaviors that are heavily implemented by government officials, diplomats and those in professional careers.

Protocol is a practical tool that can be used in many situations and with many people. Obviously, if you are working on Capital Hill with senators, politicians and lawyers, you will not gain their respect without showing proper diplomatic protocol. At the same time, having a working knowledge of how diplomatic protocol works and why it is so important can be good as gold later on. Personally, I desire to learn more about diplomatic protocol and how it works so I can greatly increase my chances to be completely professional in given situations. The principles of protocol are totally Biblically based. Simple truths like respect and honoring those in authority over your life are all found in the Scriptures.

The actions that we take and the decisions we make should be based around proper protocol and the Word. I desire to be a missionary when I grow up and reach many unreached nations with the love of Christ. I believe God is going to begin to open huge doors for me as I live in these countries and share Jesus. I believe for divine appointments to be set up where I will meet presidents of nations, chiefs of tribes and ambassadors. I want to be able to connect with them, have a strong influence and tell them about Jesus.

But I want to do it in the right way and with the proper protocol giving them respect the whole time. Protocol is something we are commanded to learn in the Bible and something that will help us succeed in every area of our lives.. Acting as Ambassadors of the King As Christians, we follow an enormously rich heritage of excellence and professionalism as well as a very high calling. We are children of the King of Kings and Lord of Lords! We should start acting like the cream of the crop and the best of the best because we are! We have a prophetic calling to be the leaders and the dreamers who do the will of the Lord and carry it out with great professionalism.

This high calling that is talked about heavily in Deuteronomy 28: 13, where we are called to be the "head and not the tail". We are partakers in every good blessing that the Lord has bestowed upon His children and are responsible carrying that with high dignity. We should hold high the banners of excellent behavior and proper protocol. We have much more to live for than the world and should start living with that mentality. The most amazing thing to think about is that we carry the same mantle of authority and righteousness that Jesus did! That is so incredibly unreal!

Despite our definite humanity and endless faults, He has entrusted us with His same authority and greatness. How many of his Children really walk in this inheritance though? How many times do we walk around like we have no idea what we are doing and why we are here? How many times do or laziness and apathy take over and we forget about excellence and professionalism in even the smallest of things?

Our spiritual status is high and so should be our behavior. To move farther and deeper into our callings as Christians, we must revisit our roots as Children of the King. We are called to be "set apart" from the rest of the world. There is an incredibly big expectation of seeing nothing but the best come from the Children of the Father. We can do it. IV.

Proper Dressing I have learned endless new things about the proper way to dress in different settings. How a person dresses makes a big statement about who they are. A simple attitude of confidence and security can be portrayed by simply what colors you choose to wear. Many of the tips that I learned in this class I will for sure begin to incorporate into my wardrobe and attire. The first of these will be always "to dress to impress". I will begin to start thinking with that mindset, especially around more formal events and dinners.

I will start by getting great solid color button down shirts and nice looking slacks that mix well with each other. The other important ingredient that is often neglected is shoes and belts. An elegant leather simple belt can incredibly accent a good pair of slacks. At the same time, shoes that are too casual can often ruin the whole outfit. I'm thinking about saving up the money to buy a nice dressy pair of black and brown shoes that go very well with different color pants. The belt and the shoes must go to together also.

You cannot have a brown belt with a black pair of shoes. Learning this simple truth will increase your chances of looking sharper. There are slightly different guidelines for dressing for a casual event, a formal event or a business event. Blue jeans for example, may be appropriate for some casual event but certainly not for business or formal things. A nice pair of dress slacks on the other hand might be too dressy for a casual event but perfect for business or formal. The advice and ideas I have learned like this I will definitely begin to incorporate into my style. V. Formal Dining.

Formal dining behavior is one of the most neglected skills taught in the world today. It is a sad fact that the majority of this next generation of youth has no idea whatsoever about how to eat right at a formal dinner. It is safe to say that formal dining is a lost art. Many people believe that if they learn to eat formal dinners in the right way, there will not be enough occasions to use this skill in the real world. There are many opportunities that arise to eat in a formal setting and you can also use these skills in more of a casual setting too. It would be a far worse mistake to eat more casual for an event than eat more formal for the same event.

A person is far better off learning the skills of how to eat proper in a more professional and formal environment. These values can be used throughout your entire life and can get you into places and impress more people than you could have ever imagined. There is really no such thing as eating "too formal" for an occasion. Even if the occasion is just a simple lunch or a little get together, you will begin to earn peoples respect if you eat with high class manners and propriety. On the other hand, if you are eating too casual at a real formal event, people will quickly notice your "lack of decency". They will immediately shut you out as a person with any sort of dignity and values.

It is a sad, but true fact. Paul says in 1 Corinthians 9: 22 that "I have become all things to all men so that by all possible means I might save some". If it takes learning how to eat a five course meal in the right manner for some people to listen to you, then just learn how to do it right.
