Radlisch's Roman History Class example essay topic
It could of quite possibly been that she did indeed want to learn about Roman history, but not when it came to hearing that her own tribe (the Vandals) sacked Rome when she was taught that the Vandals liberated Rome. Her former knowledge of the Vandals and Romans came from the traditional Vandal way of passing events verbally and not writing them down like many other civilizations. Dr. Radlisch reacts when one of his students comes to visit him under false pretences of coming in and explaining her recent absences but rather accuse him of lying, by first being frustrated with not being able to figure out where Amy is going with her conversation with him. 2"I thought we were here to discuss your absences, any problems you " ve been having".
Shows that he cares that she decided to come to him, but is absentminded of why she came. After this he begins to see the bigger picture of why she is here, the fact that she is a Vandal, and that she does not appreciate hearing that her people sacked Rome when she had always been taught that they liberated it. The only prior knowledge Dr. Radlisch had to contest that the Vandals had sacked Rome was the word of the Romans, for the reason that the Vandals do not believe in writing anything down. Which leads into the final reason why she came to his office, the final paper, which she could not do due to her background as a Vandal that was on "Lies are the province of Romans and writers". The quote 1"If Rome be weak, where shall strength be found" which was hung in Dr. Radlisch's office seemed to bring him inner peace when related to Roman history which he knew tremendously well, but is what he thought he knew well really the whole picture, or just one side of the story. After hearing what Amy having to say about the Vandals liberating Rome, Dr. Radlisch began to second-guess his opinion of this quote, because he what she said was factual, subsequently Rome was once weak.
This all leads to Dr. Radlisch questioning, 3" 'Where shall strength be found?' How was I going to learn the new ways?" This left him feeling unfulfilled with a quote which once satisfied him with an answer and a way to teach by. The unique way the professor took on determining Amy's mark after she quit coming to class, did not writing the final paper, and accused him of lying to all his students about the Vandals in Roman history. After being that Amy had not withdrawn totally from his course but rather just chose not to come to class anymore or do the final paper, he had to determine a mark for her. She didn't deserve an 'A' for not writing the final paper and not showing up for class, but she also knew her history, so she did not deserve to be flunked, Dr. Radlisch settled on a B for her mark in his course. He weighed the pros. and cons. of her situation, and figured that this would be the best thing for the both of them. Professor Radlisch is a man of values, a man of integrity, and most of all a man of honor.
Even though he was accused of lying by a twenty year old, he still had the manners to hear out what she had to say where other people would of just blown her off. He not only listened, but he interpreted and processed what she said, he acknowledged that she knew, or believed with passion that she knew what she was talking about and he understood that. Don't got one.
