Ralph: Ralph is about 12 years old and he is fair headed. He is described as being built and is chosen as the leader due to his positive qualities. Ralph is a self-assured boy whose confidence in himself came from the acceptance of his peers.

He does not care about anything at first because he has a strong belief that his father, who is in the navy, will send someone to rescue them. He had a fair nature, as he was willing to listen to Piggy. He was softer compared to Jack, and also became pretty dependent on Piggy's wisdom throughout the book. 2.) Jack Merri dew: Jack is about 12 also. He has red hair and he has a skinnier build than Ralph. Jack began as the arrogant and self-righteous leader of a choir.

The freedom of the island allowed him to further develop the darker side of his personality as the Chief of a savage tribe. He eventually took power through brute force, and toward the end had no humane feelings what so ever. He was a complete savage. 3.) Piggy: Piggy is short, overweight, has asthma, and wears glasses.

He tries his best to keep peace. His glasses are very important because they are used over and over again to start fires. Piggy was an educated boy who had grown up as an outcast. Due to his academic childhood, he was more mature than the other boys and kept his civilized behavior, but his experiences on the island gave him a more realistic understanding of the cruelty possessed by some people.

4.) The Twins: Sam and Eric are two young twins who always travel and do everything together. Without each other they are incapable of almost everything. 5.) Simon: Small, scared little boy. Keeps on seeing the "the Beast"4.) Two main conflicts: 1.) Jack vs. Society: Jack couldn't stand taking orders from Ralph anymore. It made him very angry. He didn't like participating in the rules that they had either.

(He must have felt like this before he even came to the island.) He didn't want to listen to anyone but himself and felt his ideas were the best. He wanted people to listen to him, and do what he said, not follow the crowd. He wanted to be in charge. 2.) Boys vs. Piggy: Piggy represented the kind of people that get picked on a lot.

Even the name "Piggy" tells us that. The boys were horrible to him because of his big glasses and of his weight. The boys didn't really understand either because they didn't know anyone like Piggy. For an example they didn't know what asthma was. They all just agreed that because he was different, he didn't fit in. When Jack first made fun of him, they all thought it was funny, and that he really didn't know anything.

5.) Setting: Where: This book takes place on a boat like shaped Island, off the Pacific coast. There is a tropical island, beach, and a lagoon, full of trees, and greenery. There are pigs and fish that they can eat, and different fruits. (This particular setting is essential to the story, because without this desolate island, the true savage behavior of humans would not have come out.) When: During World War II 6.) Plot: The plot unfolds as soon as a plane is accidentally shot down during World War II. The plane, containing children from a boy's school, then crashes on the island with no adults. Ralph and Piggy are the first of the boys to meet.

They find a conch shell, and Piggy tells Ralph that if you blow into a conch shell a certain way; in makes a loud, low-pitched sound. Ralph then uses the sound from the conch to call an assembly. All different aged boys appear on the shore where Ralph blows the conch. When it is thought that all of the boys are there, they begin to have a meeting. They start out by electing a chief. They choose Ralph as their Chief, over a boy who was in the choir, and his old school, named Jack.

After Jack losses, Ralph makes Jack the leader of the hunters. Jack is upset about his loss at chief, so he makes the hunters his own group. As Chief, Ralph tries to make law and build his society, all of the others seem to loose interest in helping one another and go off on their own and play. This happens when Ralph tries to build shelters; everyone builds the first one, then only four build the second one and only Ralph and a boy named Simon build the third and final one. Ralph is currently in the maturing process. He doesn't understand how to be a good leader, but he is respected by everyone one the island.

As Jack becomes better at hunting pigs, he gets more followers. There comes a time in the novel when Ralph's tribe is only Simon, Piggy, and identical twins whose names are Sam and Eric. When Jack and his hunters finally kill a pig, they invite Ralph and his group to join them. By this time they have become obsessed with hunting and killing, and Jack has broken away from Ralph's leadership. They painted their faces and were very barbaric.

Jack then killed another pig and put the head of the pig on a stake, which symbolized The Lord Of The Flies. After the feast, at night, there is a barbaric dance that contains the words, 'Kill the Pig! Cut her throat! Spill her blood!' The chant eventually turns into, 'Kill the Beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood!' While this is going on, Simon finds a dead man hanging from the rocks wearing a parachute.

When he ran to tell the boys they mistaken him for the beast and kill him. Later Ralph decides that they need a fire so that ships can rescue them. They use Piggy's glasses to start the fire. Each of the boys were told to watch out for ships but they decided to play instead so they missed their opportunity to be rescued. A few days later, Jack and his hunters sneak up on Piggy and Ralph and take Piggy's glasses to use them to start a fire again.

When Piggy and Ralph go to Jack's camp to get Piggy's glasses back, one of the hunters, Roger, pushes a boulder over the cliff. This boulder then lands on Piggy, killing him instantly. The hunters also steal the twins and destroy the conch shell. Jack then tries to kill Ralph. Ralph ran into the woods to hide. Jack set the island on fire to try to smoke Ralph out.

When Ralph was running away from the smoke, he ran into a naval officer who had seen the smoke and came to rescue them. He thought that the boys were just playing games, but he really didn't know how much the boys had gone through while they were on that island. 7.) Two things I learned from this book: 1.) I learned that it doesn't matter what your appearance may be, you need to be nice to people. Take Piggy for example.

He was short and over weight, and because of this he was made fun of, and called "Piggy", and yet he still managed to be nice to people. No matter how much they made fun of him, he kept his head high. 2.) The second thing I learned is that you should never get into an airplane with your classmates, and have the chance of this happening to you. All of these boys' moral values (if they had any) went out the window. They were killing people, and had no mercy.

They were inhuman! 8.) Two main themes: 1.) One possible theme could be, society holds everyone together, and with out these conditions, our ideals, values, and the basics of right and wrong are lost. 2.) Another possible theme is that people often single out others to give themselves security. This happened a lot with Piggy, which wasn't fair. The boys definitely singled him out and Piggy was the only one who really knew what was happening.
