the book shoeless joe takes place in iowa present day. the story is much more about dreams and second chances than it is about baseball. it starts off with the main character ray kins ella an ordinary man who live an ordinary life in an ordinary town. where he crops corn, his main source for income. ray kins ella was called upon by ultimately inhuman forces, a voice, to go on a physical as well as an emotional journey. the voice told him' if u build, he will come'. at first ray was extremely kep tical of the significance of his obscure calling, but he got a vision an soon knew what he was being called to do. ray risked the emotional as well as his economic stability of his family he loved to build a baseball field. after completing the baseball field " shoeless joe jackson', his fathers hero before he passed away, suddenly appeared in the field to talk to ray and play baseball. ray had an extraordinary supernatural ability to revive celebrities from both the world of baseball and literature who have been dead for many years. ray continued to relieve messages, after each new message ray wa called upon to further his journey. his journey involved travelling to various cities around the US as well as facing issues within himself that he had hidden for many years. blind faith and perhaps a bit of insanity were all that drove him to continue on his journey. only at the end of his journey was it made clear to him the purpose for his quest. when ray was a teenager he had had a misunderstanding with his father john kins ella which was never resolved. after the death of his dad, ray was overcome with quilt and emptiness because of the fact that their conflict was never resolved. completing his journey allowed him to make amends with his deceased father and alleviate himself of the eternal burden of never forgiving himself for the words that they exchanged. now this journey was really hard on ray and his family because he plowed down his corn field to build the baseball field and was in danger of losing his home. at one point of the book ray was tempted to give up and go back home to establish his 'security' but he was able to overcome thee obstacles and j. d salinger a famous american author was provided to him to help him on his journey. at first they didnt seem to agree or get along, but as time passed they came to know each other and became close. if it wasnt for mr salinger ray might have given up on the rare and unique opportunity to resolve a conflict he would have otherwise been burdened for the rest of his life. the messages that ray relieved his journey played an extremely important role, if not for the voice he might never been aware of the opportunity to settle differences between him and his father. after the purpose of his quest was revealed to him, ray's hope was restored and he was in tilled with a new sense of faith and wisdom about life. all along ray was looking for the reason why the messages were being sent to him, but while seeking for the meaning of the message, he found peace within himself. he was not consciously aware that the reason for his journey was to find a means by with he could make amends with his father, but in the end, simply by searching for what the me sages meant he was able to reconcile with his father and come to peace with himself, and that i feel is the mot interesting part of the story, when i found out that the words " if you build it they will come' were talking about his father, same with the message' ease his pain' the whole time he was talking about his father not joe jackson or jd salinger or any other baseball or literature celebrity. they were meekly 'helping hands' on his quest for a second chance.
