Politics is about who gets what, when, where and how. Having read all of the essays, politics can be compared and contrasted as a necessary activity, a means and ends, and as a blood sport. After reading all of the essays, I would define the word politics as a controversy over what ought it be and what is. One way politicians define politics is by the way of combating the degradation of society into a violent and unstructured mess by reducing it to be governed by the primitive instincts of man in order to resolve conflicts. In our American Democracy one must understand the two party system, idealism, and how our economy works as a whole. Politics has connotations in the ways in which to create the ideal society with a power struggle between those in influential positions.

However, how much good do these parties actually do? Would our country be run as effectively if the presence of political parties were no longer a factor? The concept of politician parties seems to go against what it means to be a politician: to represent his or her consultants. In the essay, Bill Clinton and Political Idealism, author Allie Russell Hochschild states, "American teenagers are now spending more time alone (3 1/2 hrs.) than teenagers used to, and spending more time alone than they spend with family and friends. The result sets a stage for a decline in civic engagement among the young".

Therefore, President Bush needs to find a way to inspire idealism in the young. At the age of 18, teens are expected to vote and make a difference. This would involve teenagers following the polls and knowing the different types of democracies. First, pure democracy would affect the young the most. Pure democracy involves knowing everything about politics because it affects you in some way. Second, representative democracy puts space between individuals and government.

This gives the politician the time to see what is the best for the world. Last, is a pluralist democracy formed of political action committees that consist of interest groups (AARP is the largest group). These interest groups impact legislation by large sums of money. Another category teenagers much listen closely to is our system of three boxes, which covers health care.

The systems runs like this: If you " re old, you " re in the Medicare box. If you " re a veteran, you " re in the V.A. box. If you " re working, you " re in the employer-sponsored box. The young only have to concentrate on the third box at this point in their life. Each of these boxes has huge bureaucracy and each spends lots of money. Now, the government's focus is to get people classified out of these boxes.

Therefore, Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) was a racial student organization of the 1960's. Posted vision for post-Vietnam War American and called for students to join in a movement to establish "participatory democracy". However, today teenagers have the chance to learn more about politics through the young democratic or young republican clubs that are sponsored by each party in different counties. "The economy" means the way the leading indicators have behaved in the preceding year.

The real economy requires the creation of achievement in new industries, new technology, and an increase in levels of productivity and wealth. Through the economy the politicians respond to public opinion in two ways. First, they assemble information on public opinion to design government policy "pandering". Second, they use research on public opinion to pinpoint the most alluring words, symbols, and arguments in an attempt to move public opinion to support their desired policies.

One reason is, "The people versus the powerful, meaning to rally members of the middle class who felt threatened by "powerful forces" beyond their control, such as HMO's and tobacco (Al Gore, A Renaissance of Liberalism)".
