The type of genre is what most audience choose before seeing a movie. In this category, both movies stand out because they are not bound to a certain genre. The two explore the boundaries of several genres, and put the characteristics of the genres together beautifully. The genre of "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" is defined as Adventure, Drama, Action, Fantasy and Romance. Some call it a wuxi a film, which is defined as a martial-chivalric film. It's only a waste of time trying to figure out what kind of film it is, because of the wide variety of style it covers.
"The Matrix" is defined as Action, Thriller, Sci-Fi and some Romance. But it certainly is a lot more than an ordinary action movie because of the heavy (?) messages and theme throught the movie. It leaves an enormous question; What is real? and what is the matrix? The bold story that aimed straight to our reason of existence was more than enough to let us question ourselves. One of the reason that these two movies cling in our minds is because they have provided and conveyed some specific messages between their intense and powerful screenplays. The story of "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", like all other martial arts stories, is just plain silly at some point, but Ang Lee has done a successful job to bring out and connect the elements of the story, such as the unrealized love between the Chow Yun-Fat and Michelle Yeoh characters.
And Zhang Ziyi's character, who is the governor's daughter being forced to live a limited life. The story of "The Matrix" is also complex, yet not difficult. The basic plot is that a computer hacker (Neo), learns from mysterious rebels about the true nature of his reality and his role in the war against the controllers of the Matrix. Not only Neo (Keanu Reaves) is finding out about the truth, the story is so compelling that it forces us to wonder what is real and what is the truth in our world. Similar to "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", Love is an important role in the story. Rather than being too touching, Love is laid throughout these two movies and come out only when it's necessary, like when the time Neo is dying and trying to get back to life; and the real reason why Master Li Mu Bai (Chow Yun-Fat) decides to stop wondering and come back home.
The details of making these two movies were also astonishing; both had world's best crews to work with. The choreography of the action scenes in "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" was designed by Yuen Wo-Ping, whose credits include "The Matrix", and who understands that form is more important than function. And "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" would be incomplete with Tan Dun's wonderful score, which provides one of the best utilization's of the cello used in a movie. The music carries and puts the emotion into higher level.
"The Matrix" also features a number of famous music artists such as Madonna, Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie. Both movies stand out with their unique characteristics, however, in an attempt to pick a better movie, it would be "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon". Although "The Matrix" has superb cinematography, excellent special effects, choreography, great story, "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" not only covers all those facts, it surely surpasses in its story, acting and dialog. And having overcome the difficulty being a subtitled movie in America clearly indicates how perfect it would be in original language. "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" is one move that no one should miss.
