Anti-Abortion Abortion is a serious topic that people have been debating about for years. Everywhere you turn the topic of abortion presents itself, on TV, in the newspapers, in books and magazines. It already has, and will continue to cause, controversy for years to come. As long as abortion remains legal, pro-life advocates will continue to protest what they believe to be these horrible acts of murder.

Dating all the way back to the 1800's, abortions have been taking place all over the world. In the US abortion laws were created around 1820 stating that women would not have abortions after already being pregnant for four months. Then by 1900 most abortions were outlawed. It wasn't until 1956 that all fifty states had banned abortion with certain exceptions varying by state. Abortions were performed in the case of rape or incest in order to save the life of the mother, or if the fetus was deformed.

It was then that back alley abortions started becoming very popular. Women were finding any way possible to be rid of babies they didn't want. It wasn't until later years in the case of Roe vs. Wade that abortion was again allowed. The Supreme Court in 1973, in the case of Roe vs. Wade, declared most existing state abortion laws unconstitutional. This decision ruled out any legislative interference in the first trimester of pregnancy and put limits on what restrictions could be passed on abortions in later stages of pregnancy (Rand). While most celebrated this new decision, others, like those in the Roman Catholic Church for example, opposed the change.

It was then that the terms "Pro-Life" and "Pro-Choice" were coined as the two movement names: Pro-Life in favor of outlawing most abortions, while pro-choice in favor of it being the woman's right to choose. Pro-choice advocates usually use the argument of "a women's right to choose". But does that mean women have the right to choose murder, because that is what she would be doing if the fetus were a person. Abortion is a very controversial subject that has been argued about for many years. Abortion is the process that takes the lives of unborn babies that could very well have a long and prosperous life. How do we know every time we perform an abortion that we aren't taking the life of the person who would one day grow up and find the cure for AIDS, or become president?

Every human being has the right to live, so who is to decide that one shouldn't be? A human being is created at the moment of conception. It has a genetic make up from the time of creation, therefore making it a living thing. It was argued that the fetus was just a mass of tissue that wasn't really alive, but it has been proven that it is indeed a human being. The concept fetus is used to denote the unborn human from the end of the eighth week after conception to the moment of birth, as distinguished from the earlier embryo (the product of conception from implantation in the uterus through the eighth week of development).

A fetus contains all the organs and has the basic human form. (Rand) So when we take the life of a fetus, we are taking the life of another human being. Looking at abortion from a religious viewpoint, abortion is a mortal sin. Taking the life of a human being is the greatest sin a human can commit. If it is not acceptable to take the life of a 5 year old, an 18 year old, or a 50 year old, then why is it acceptable to take the life of a human who hasn't even had the chance to live yet? The point is it shouldn't be.

Taking a life, no matter what the age is, is morally wrong. An unexpected pregnancy is no reason to abort the baby. If someone is mature enough to make the decision to have sex, they should be mature enough to do it properly, and if they do not, they should live with the consequences of their actions. The only way to totally prevent a pregnancy is to practice total abstinence, which is the only birth control that is 100%.

Practicing the act of safe sex can easily prevent pregnancy. There are many different forms of birth control, some can be obtained only through prescription, some anyone can walk into the store and buy off the shelf. The birth control pill, injections, vaginal ring, skin patch, intrauterine device (IUD), diaphragm, Lea's Shield, and cervical cap require a prescription. Condoms and spermicides do not.

With the exceptions of such things as rape, women are aware of what they are doing when they have sex, therefore they should know just what they are getting themselves into. The male in the relationship is just as responsible as the female. He too should always be prepared to have safe sex, because it is just as much the male's fault as the females if she becomes pregnant. Another reason abortion should be avoided is because if a woman has more than one, her body can become damaged. The more times the cervix undergoes stress -- be it from D&Cs (for abortions or for abnormal bleeding) or from a LEEP or con ization treatment after an abnormal pap smear -- the more likely it may be injured.

Such injury includes scarring of the cervix, or cervical stenosis, which can prevent menstrual blood from getting out and sperm from getting in; this leads to higher chances of endometriosis or infertility. Another possible complication is cervical incompetence, in which the cervix is weakened and opens up inappropriately during pregnancy, leading to miscarriage or premature delivery (Shanahan). After a certain amount of abortions, a woman may not be able to have children in the future. And depending on the body of a woman, and how strong she is, the body can become so damaged that she may not be able to become pregnant again after only one abortion.

With the risk of not being able to have a child in the future, women should take that into great consideration before having an abortion. If a woman is not financially sound enough to raise the baby, she should give birth, and then put it up for adoption. There is a large number of families in the United States looking to adopt. So many in fact, that adoption agency's now have to go overseas to find children for families wanting to adopt a child. Pro - life activists strongly stand up for what they believe in.

There are many groups and organizations that are against abortion. Pro - life activists also march on Washington once a year to try and demonstrate their feelings to the government. Since 1973 when abortion was legalized, about 1.5 Million have been killed in America every year since. That is over 20 million babies killed. Innocent human beings who for all we know could have gown up to be something great, but now we will never know. No matter how you look at it, abortion is wrong.

It is the taking of innocent lives. Not only that, but the lives of humans who really have no way to defend themselves against it. The longer we keep abortion legal, the more and more innocent lives will be taken by people who are probably just cleaning up after a irresponsible mistake. If we made abortion illegal again, people would start to become more careful in their sexual acts because if they don't they will have a baby to live with and raise. When discussing abortion, we should keep the women's health as a major concern. Although abortion is a safe process, it does cause long-term damage to a woman's body.

Present day, birth control is so cheap that there is no reason that sexually active couples should not be able to afford and put it to use. If a woman becomes pregnant, and she doesn't want the child, her other option besides getting an abortion is adoption. In the US there is such a large amount of people looking to adopt, that a home can easily be found for a new born infant.
