WORLD CIV. SINCE 1660 DIVINE RIGHT OF KINGS The storm broke during the reign of King Louis XVI. He was twenty years old when he came to the throne. No one could have been more out place than he was and he realized this and often wished he were just a common man.

His greatest fault was that he was always ready to listen to others and follow their advise. When this advise was good, everything was fine. But later on in King Louis XVI's reign the advise was bad and it cost the king his life. When King Louis XVI first came to the throne, he trusted the management of the finances of the kingdom to Turgot, one of his best statesmen. AS long as the king followed his ministers advise, the state of the kingdom was improved, but he was often under the influence of the frivolous queen, Marie Antoinette. He was also persuaded by his selfish courtiers, who opposed any financial reforms.

After a while they persuaded the King to dismiss his minister. When Louis became king of France in 1774, France was burdened with debts and heavy taxation. This resulted in misery among the French people. Immediately after he was crowned, Louis remitted some of the most oppressive taxes and instituted financial and judicial reforms.

Calonne was appointed finance minister in 1783. He borrowed money from the court until his borrowing limit was reached. The French people were angry by now, by the taxes and the excessive spending of the court. Louis XVI was forced to call a meeting of the Estates General in Versailles on May 5, 1789. At first the king seemed to want to try and solve the problems, but the influence of the queen and of the courtiers were too strong. He was ordered to aid against the revolution from Austria.

His disregard of his promises to abide by the constitution led to the invasion of the royal palace of the Tuileries on August 10, 1792. The king and his family escaped before the mob arrived but he was soon sentenced to prison and then sentenced to death. King James XI and I became the king of Scotland at age 1, although it wasn't till he was about 19 when he started to rule. His father was murdered and his mother was imprisoned and eventually executed.

King James believed in the divine right of kings and the monarchs duty to reign according to gods law and the public good. The King being Scottish and Ruling Scotland and England too also gave him many enemies. The king endured much racism and slander remarks from once powerful English lords and ladies who he replaced with his Scottish countrymen. Although a lot of people were against some of things he done, he still had a lot of great achievements such as the King James Version of the bible. He also united Scotland and England and united Ireland into Great Britain.

The King had very many accomplishments before his death at age 59. Both of these kings ruled under a monarchy. That is where the king appoints all the officials and no one else has any say in it. In my opinion a government like we have today is a lot better because the people who live in the cities and towns get to vote for their officials. That way seems the fairest way to the people.

They see which candidate they like best and vote for him or her and the majority vote wins. Both kings also spent a lot of money and no one had any say so really to tell him he could or couldn't. Today we at least have some say so in the way we spend our money. I would prefer todays government over a monarchy anyday. It just seems to be an easier more productive method. Sources web web web.
