When Celie's sister, Nettie, went away, Celie thought Nettie was dead because she was never heard from again. But the whole time Nettie was writing letters to Celie but Mr. took and hid the letters. He didn? t want Celie to get them because he didn? t want her to have any hope. He wanted to oppress her so she would do whatever he wanted. In the beginning, Celie and Shug did not get along. But later on in the book they became the best of friends and were not able to live without each other.
Shug helped Celie find the letters, she taught her how to read, how to read them without getting caught by Mr., and how to sew pants so Celie could open her own business. This relationship developed over time and made all the difference in Celie's life and made it easier to cope with it. Because of Shug Celie was able to live a happy life. Harpo was not the greatest husband in the world to Sofie. And Sofie was not the type of person to take the way he treated her lightly.
Neither one was to blame for the collapse of their relationship since they were both mean and nasty to one another. Harpo tried to control Sofie and keep her under his thumb. Sofie wouldn? t go for it and beat up Harpo. They both were to blame for the collapse of their relationship since neither of them was able to truly love the other.
