Relationship Between Winston And Julia example essay topic

In the book 1984, Winston Smith's life, along with the entire story, was dramatically changed with the introduction of the relationship between Winston and Julia. Winston, a lonely newspaper re-writer, finds out that his thought enemy, Julia, isn t whom he first believes. After their first informal meeting they seem to have fallen for each other. This is what eventually causes joy, anger, frustration and betrayal for both Winston and Julia. Winston Smith is just a lonely worker with too much time on his hands. His recent feelings about Big Brother and the Party are alien in the world around him.

He feels as if he is the only sane person in all of Oceania. He, himself, was witness to the deceitfulness in Oceania. "And if all others accepted the lie which the Party imposed if all records told the same tale then the lie passed into history and became truth. ' Who controls the past' ran the Party slogan, ' controls the future: who controls the present controls the past.

' (Pg 32) Winston is going downhill. He doesn t know how long he will be alive and he becomes moderately afraid. Then Julia, or the dark-haired girl as Winston first named her, appearing near Winston. She worried him the most at first when he thought she was part of the Thought police. Even so, Winston found out something unusual about her.

Julia was similar to him in many ways! First, she loathed and was totally displeased by the Party. Second, She made everyone believe that she was full of goodness and prestige. Third they both were very frank when they found someone they could really love or trust, which didn t come easy. All of Winston's previous thoughts of her changed when they first met officially. Winston finally met his true love, or has he?

Julia seemed not to care about some of the same issues Winston favors. For example, Julia doesn t seem to care what will happen in the future of Oceania, because she knows no one can overthrow the Party. In Winston's case, he is very interested in the future of Oceania and he wants to do his part in helping further generations overthrow the Party. Winston doesn t know what to make of his relationship with Julia, but more than ever, he loves her. Julia is a clever, stealthy kind of woman whose true personally is not uncovered until she first meets Winston Smith. Unlike Winston, she is basically a simple woman, something of a lightweight who loves her man and uses sex for fun as well as for rebellion.

She is perfectly willing to accept the overnight changes in Oceania's history and doesn't trouble her pretty head about it. If Big Brother says black is white, fine. If he says two and two equals five, no problem. She may not buy the Party line, but it doesn't trouble her. This makes her a slightly smarter person than Winston. Her perspective is very simple and straightforward.

If you keep the small rules, you can break the big ones she would say, or I m due back at nineteen-thirty. I ve got to put in two hours for the Junior Anti-Sex League, handing out leaflets, or something. Isn t it bloody? (Pg 106) It was odd that Julia was attracted to Winston.

Of course Winston thought she was insane for taking a chance of being vaporized just so they could meet. Even though she could become very witty and fool the Party. The relationship between Winston and Julia was in itself complex. Two people that before never talked to each, were now madly in love?

Julia seems to think that they make a good couple (hidden that is), while Winston is less optimistic. Winston indeed sees Julia as a youthful, commanding, sharp and attractive woman. Even though he is certain that they will both face the ultimate price for their thought crimes, death. Julia still believes that they can fool the Party for a long time, like she had done before.

Both characters have an affect on one another, but Julia has a greater affect on Winston. She makes him take many more chances than he would have done before. He goes out with her a lot more, and he even rents a room at Mr. C harrington shop so they have a decent place to meet. Likewise, Winston does affect Julia, even though not greatly.

For example, she joins the Brotherhood mainly because of Winston's desire to do so. They seem to have found their unlikely mate. Though the entire story Winston seems to be not accepting things as they are, he wants to make a difference and not just be another loyal servant of Big Brother and the Party. Julia decides that she doesn t have the power nor the will to even risk her life so greatly for something she believes can never happen. Even though all of this madness is happening in their world, they both find someone they can love and relate to. Many of these ideas can be shown within the book by using quotes such as this one.

Winston- I hate purity, I hate goodness. I don t want any virtue to exist anywhere. I want everyone to be corrupt to the bones. Julia- Well then, I ought to suit you, dear.

I m corrupt to the bones. (Pg 104-5) Their lives were greatly affected by the relationship itself, and the many events that followed. While even in a world full of strict rules, where love is not accepted, Winston and Julia seem to have found true romance.
