Many authors have been inspired by William Shakespeare one way or another. Sometimes they may not realize it, but a reader can identify comparisons immediately while reading their novels. In Romeo and Juliet, one of Shakespeare's greatest works, and Summer of my German Soldier by Bette Green, there are some comparisons between characters. These characters share similar ideas, thoughts, and feelings. Romeo and Juliet has three main characters who help each other in time of need.

These characters are Friar Lawrence, Romeo, and Juliet. In Summer of my German Soldier, these characters are Ruth, Patty, and Anton. Friar Lawrence was a guide and mentor towards Romeo and Juliet. He helped them in every way he possibly could.

He preformed their marriage and gave generally good advice to them. Friar Lawrence tried to unite Rome and Juliet to bring them to eternal happiness. Although he believed that this marriage was not such a good idea, he married them anyway because he loves Romeo dearly. Both Romeo and Juliet turn to Friar Lawrence every time they need guidance. They do not turn to their parents because they do not have as much confidence in them as they do towards Friar Lawrence.

They turned to him for their final major problem, Juliets marriage to Paris. Friar Lawrence, shocked and in a hurry, give a solution that will forever change the course of their love and lives. He proposes that Juliet take a vile which will make her appear dead. The turnout to this plan was not exactly what everyone planned. Romeo did not recieve the letter explaining this plan, therefore killing himself seconds before Juliet awakes. Juliet kills herself after realizes Romeo is dead.

They both have unite, in there after life. Ruth is the motherly figure towards Patty. She is there to listen, help, and give advice to Patty.
