So many people supported Stalin and Mussolini even with their totalitarian methods because of the extreme poverty in both countries. Both Russia and Italy were destroyed economically and emotionally by the events of World War I. The citizens of each nation looked for a way out of poverty. Stalin and Mussolini provided a way out, and the classes didn't care how they did it. After the war Russia was at least 50 years behind the rest of the Western countries in industry.

One of the first things Stalin took the industry world seriously. He knew he had to catch up to the rest of the world if Russia was going to be a world power. So what Stalin did was take full control of all of the industry in Russia. This way he could control an see what exactly was going on, and make sure it was being done right.

The Russian citizens saw what was doing but did not complain because it created an abundant of jobs. Now while Russia was on their way of becoming a superpower there was also people working and getting out of poverty. This made the Russian citizens supportive of Stalin's ways, and created a new nationalistic state of mind of being a Russian. Before Benito Mussolini Italy was full of problems, and had virtually no army. The Italian army was weak and had no real leadership.

Mussolini was defiantly a military leader and goal was to make The Italian army a world superpower. Mussolini was always a visible military leader. He always wore a military uniform. Under Mussolini the Italian army would have marches down public streets to show everyone there power.

The Italian people were catholic and looked to the pope and church for leadership. In the past the Italian government did not have a good relationship with the church, and never got support from the people because of that. The best thing Mussolini did was repair the relationship between the Catholic Church and Italy. This gave him the support he needed from the people, and the power the gain control of the military. The reason Stalin and Mussolini received so much support from their people is because they took their countries out of poverty and made there military strong.

Also the people were so poor that they were willing to give up some of their freedom to become a strong economic and military power.
