The book is about two young people named Sadie and Kevin, who both live in Belfast, North Ireland. Sadie and Kevin meet each other on the street one-day and begin to talk about old times. They soon afterwards begin to go out and see each other more often, but a problem occurs. Sadie is a Protestant and Kevin a Catholic. Their parents are against the two being together and try to prevent Sadie and Kevin from seeing each other. This soon escalates into a violent affair and Kevin is beaten up by one of his former friends, Brian Rafferty, for two reasons.

For Seeing Sadie and refusing to hide a rifle for Brian. Kevin's sister pays Sadie a visit soon after Kevin was beat and begs her to stop seeing Kevin. Kevin (still wounded) arranges to meet Sadie later that night, but Sadie hesitates. While Kevin waits for Sadie, he meets Mr. Blake.

Mr. Blake is Sadie's former geography teacher who used to teach at her old school. He has since then retired. Mr. Blake is worried about Kevin's wounds and offers to take him home and call a doctor. They are about to go when Sadie suddenly shows up.

Mr. Blake offers them both tea and the young couple accept his offer and goes home to Mr. Blake. Their friendship with Mr. Blake grows and they begin to visit him more often, but some people disapprove of the two being together at Mr. Blake's house and try to break them up, by first sabotaging Mr. Blake's car but that didn't work, so they threw a petrol bomb through the window of Mr. Blake's house. This, unfortunately, kills Mr. Blake. They feel guilty for Mr. Blake's death and avoid each other. Kevin decides that he's "going to get away from it all" and move to England.

Sadie comes to see him off but then Kevin convinces her to move to England with him and the book ends with a sort of happy ending. Despite it all, Kevin and Sadie stayed together. Written by Thomas Grove.
