Taylor and Aaron were a match made in heaven. They met for the first time in a biology lab while high school and were inseparable. For years they were best of friends and while in college, decided to date. A spark occurred for the two and after a few years they decided to take the next step and make their love official, get married. But they have one problem. Taylor and Aaron are both males and many states do not legally recognize same sex marriages.

So what do they do now? In this paper, I will evaluate same sex marriages and why states should recognize same sex marriages. Gay marriages have been one of the most intense and controversial topics in our society. There are still problems concerning this issue of homosexuality and gay marriages.

Same sex marriages are legal in Hawaii, but in other states couples must be of opposite sex to form a union. Hawaii's decision to legalize same sex marriages is considered a milestone victory for gays and may cause a ripple effect for similar action in other states. One reason why people argue against same sex marriages is due to their religious origin. The fact that people mix up the right for individuals to marry with the belief of their spiritually is wrong.

In my opinion people should not concern themselves with others peoples home life and sexually but concern themselves with what is happening in their homes. Reality is that there are so many people who belong to religions that tell them homosexuality is a sin, that we often tie our religious beliefs into what should be done fairly. If a poll was taken on gay and lesbian marriages and why they shouldn't be allowed, the response that would outweigh others would be religion. People would actually be ready to quote scriptures from the bible. But what other reason could they actually give to justify homosexuals no having the right to marriage?

No other efficient reason could be given. Although we are entitled to our own opinion, we should think of the fact that we can not deny a person of their right to be with whosoever they choose. Another reason why I believe that couples of the same sex should be allowed to marry is the fact that denying them is unconstitutional. If you think about the agrement that homosexual couples are making is the fact that they believe that there are two different marriages. One marriage would be the traditional religious marriage. One in which you are married under the site of god and by a pastor of the church of your chose.

This is what America and religious organizations believe gay couples want. Civil marriages are a legal contract consisting of obligations and benefits. Gay couples want the ceremony to be recognized by the state. They want for the union of two people to be legal and recognized because they want to be able to receive items like benefits from their jobs for their spouses, medical and bereavement leave, child custody, tax benefits and pension plans. If the state does not recognize their union they do not qualify for the benefits of married couples. Domestic partnerships are amiable, but could be upgraded to marriage.

The United States Supreme Court has declared marriage a fundamental right under the Constitution. Amendment Nine of the US Constitution states that rights shall not be denied or disparage others retained by the people. Clearly this goes against the rights of homosexual couples. Lastly, I believe that denying couples of the same sex not to marry is a form of discrimination. The government might agree that tradition has it that a man and a women marry. But tradition can not justify discrimination.

Not long ago, marriage was traditionally limited to members of the same race and religion, and married women were virtually the legal property of their husbands. If this was considered discrimination, wouldn't not recognizing same sex marriages be similar? All marriages should be recognized but the states because denying Americans this right discriminates their choice of who they chose to have as a spouse. To conclude, it is not the job of the government or any other person to determine the worthiness of two people to marry. Marriage is basically a piece of paper that says that two people are going to take on the legal responsibilities that go along with marriage.

Gay couples are asking for the states to give them this paper so they can get some of the same right that other couples get. They love each other just like any other couple and should receive the same treatment. The government needs to stop pulling against these couples and recognize exactly what they want..
