Sandra Cisneros, a famous American who wrote novels, short-stories, essays, and poems was born December 20, 1954 in Chicago. Cisneros is one of the first Spanish American writers who has achieved much success. She is admired by many of the other famous writers because of her style of writing. Sandra was the only girl of three brothers who only wanted her to continue the traditional role of a mexican women, like clean the house and cook. She was a free spirit and didnt want to live her life like that. Because of her father's homesickness Sandras family frequently moved between the United States and Mexico. As a result of always moving around she felt like she had no home. The only way she could get away from the world was to read. She read books like Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and The Little House. She recieved her B.A. from Loyola University in 1976 and her M.F. A from the University of Iowa Writers' Workshop in 1978.
This workshop that she went to is known to put out many renowned authors. Sandra grew up writing short stories and poems just like any other kid would, but it was the situations she was put in in the Writer's Workshop that inspired her to realize that her experiences as a latin woman were few and far from and very different from the traditional American women. So, she decided to write about situations directly relating to her childhood. Including ethnicity, poverty and, cultural oppression...
When she wrote about these things she was the first, and was looked down at because of it. Only later on when she wrote The House on Mango Street in 1983 people really started to appreciate her works. Today, Sandras writings give realistic lessons about feelings that, as a child, she felt were only hers, namely loneliness, cultural division and shame. Sandra doesnt only write she teaches at an E.S. L high school in chicago and also has been a college recruiter and counselor for cultural students at Loyal a University of Chicago. She has been a guest professor at University of California, California State University, Ann Arbor and the University of New Mexico, Berkeley, University of California, Irvine, University of Michigan, Albuquerque.
