Romeo is a member of the Montague family and is currently in love with Roseline. Juliet on the other end is a Capulet and the love interest of Paris, a rich man.

Romeo and Juliet meet at a party of the Capulet's. Romeo enters the party in disguise because he is an enemy of the Capulets. Tybalt easily recognizes Romeo and challenges him to a duel. This does not happen because Lord Capulet tells Tybalt that Romeo is a good kid and is just looking for some fun... Romeo and Juliet kiss and meet in the orchard later that night where they agree to get married. Shortly later the next day the Friar marries them but thinks it ill advised because they just recently met.

That same day Mercutio get in a fight with Tybalt. Mercutio is killed and Romeo avenges his death by killing Tybalt Romeo did not wish to fight Tybalt because they were family but does any way. Romeo is then banished to Mantua. Juliet is supposed to marry the County Paris, so she goes to the friar in hopes that he can counsel her. The Friar devises a plan to use his great botany skill to make a potion that makes Juliet look like she's dead.

She takes the potion and is placed inside the Capulet's tomb. The only problem is that Romeo is not told of this plan and thinks she is dead. He decides that he will kill himself since he will never be happy. On his way into the tomb, Paris sees him and tries to arrest him. Paris does not know what Romeo is trying to do and thinks he is there to disgrace the bodies. They break into a fight and Paris is killed.

Romeo then enters the tomb and drinks the potion on Juliet's deathbed. He dies and Juliet awakes. She then kills herself with Romeo's knife. The families see what has happened and decide to end the feud. 7 Love is the largest and most common theme. Nearly everyone experiences love or a lose of love.

Romeo first experiences love with Roseline. It is not true love but a fickle love that ends quickly. His next loves is more serious but is still fickle to say the least. There is also love between Mercutio and Romeo. It is a very somber and brotherly love. When Tybalt takes this love from Romeo, he feels like he must take something from Tybalt.

This leads to Tybalt's death. Hastiness is also a very common theme in this play. Hastiness is so common because of the age of Romeo and Juliet. They are young and they must deal with the situations to the best of their ability. This leads to some very rash decisions.

Their marriage is a perfect example of this. They love each other and due to their circumstances they feel they must be wed. Hatred is the third most common theme. Hatred seems to over ride all other emotions because it swells its victim till they explode.

This leads to the death of both Tybalt, Mercutio, and Paris. All though nobody truly wanted them to die, hatred over whelmed them and caused them to do it 8 The poison used by each lover is symbolic of many things. Most importantly it is a symbol of their love for each other. No matter what the cost they must be together. It is also a symbol of the pressures put on them by their surroundings. Most of all it is a release, a release from the madness that was surrounding them.

Another powerful symbol is the families sword. They are symbolic of their power and freedom. Without their swords they are defenseless to the influence of the other family. It is also symbolic of their hatred for each other because whenever a fight peaks a sword is always drawn. One of the more abstract symbols is Mantua. It is symbolic of loneliness because it is where Romeo is sent.

Romeo's only love at that time is Juliet and now he can't be with her. Without Juliet Romeo is nothing, and in Mantua Romeo can't be with Juliet. 9 But soft! What light through yonder window breaks? It is the East, and Juliet is the sun! Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon, Who is already sick and pale with grief That thou her maid are far more fair than she.

(II. 2.2-6) This is a very beautiful line full of symbolic meaning. It truly describes the love between Romeo and Juliet. What's in a name? That which we call a rose By any other word would smell as sweet.

(II. 2.43-44) This line is beautiful for its comparison between a name and a rose. I like this quote because it just plain makes sense. 10 Romeo and Juliet is a very significant title because it is simple yet powerful and just.

It is this because, like in the title, they are all alone in the world and feel that without each other they are nothing. This is true about the title. Romeo in a sentence is not nearly as powerful as if they were put together as Romeo and Juliet. Other suitable titles include anything pertaining to love and tragedy since that is what this play is about. I would also be happy if the play was called, A Rose By Any Other Name, since that is a beautiful line from the play and has a lot of meaning. 11 Oxymoron are used often in Romeo and Juliet.

Most of them go unnoticed without a deep look into the text. The definition of an oxymoron, according to the Random House Webster's Dictionary, is "a figure of speech that uses seemingly contradicting statements" To of the most visual oxymoron I found were "cruel kindness" and "dove-feathered" raven. I picked these because they were easy to see and very simple to understand. Shakespeare is commonly known for his use of the five act play.

Romeo and Juliet consists of five acts. I think Shakspeare chooses this format because it is very structured. With this format you can easily identify the introduction, rising action, falling action and so on. Shakespeare, because of his time set, uses many allusions to Greek mythology.

I thought this strange because of the religious differences. Then is realized that even though he does not believe in the religious portion he still sees the moral lessons taught by these stories. That is why he often refers back to them in his plays.
