The feeling of success is best described as joy and pride in one's ability to accomplish goals while surpassing obstacles. Success and self-satisfaction are most appreciated when you work hard and depend upon yourself to accomplish excellence. I experienced the feeling of great achievement on last spring after the death of a close friend named Latasia Wilson that winter. Tay (Latasia) and I were on the varsity basketball cheerleading squad together. Tay was in the twelfth grade and I was in the eleventh. Tay was a very sweet, kind, friendly, and loving person.

At the time we had previous association with each other but were not what would be considered close friends. Over the summer, and at cheerleading camp, the senior and junior cheerleaders were very separated. Tay was the first senior to approach me and befriend me in spite of the fact that we were in different grade levels. Tay always motivated unity and success on the squad. She continuously showed me that she was truly my friend and I could call on her whenever I needed to.

From elementary to high school I have always been an honor roll student keeping a "B" average. But, during this school year my grades were slipping because of a previous foot injury that kept me from attending school on a regular basis. Tay always encouraged me to go to tutoring instead of practice when it was necessary. She also explained that she would help me in any subjects when she could.

At the beginning of the year 2003 Latasia had surgery on her knee for a torn ACL. During the surgery there was internal bleeding and Tay did not live through the operation. I attempted to stay strong in the public eye and around Tay's family. Though no one could tell I was still hurting, my grades in all of my classes were evidence. I continued to work hard and study so that I could pull my grades up to "A's and B's" by the end of the school year. This was difficult because of constant reminders all around the school and in my day-to-day life.

When the time came to take finals, I took Tay's advice and attended tutoring with all of my teachers. With confidence I took my finals and assured myself of success. At the end of the year once school was out, but before the distribution of report cards, I visited all of my instructors to find out the status of my final grades. When I was reported all "A's" and one "B" I felt great satisfaction in knowing in the end I pulled through. My greatest achievement was being at peace with the death of my close friend Latasia and knowing that she can still help me and be a good friend without physically being on this earth..
