Sectional Differences Between Slave And Free States example essay topic
Even Texas was affected by the sectional differences of the United States. The political divisions of the United States greatly affected politics between the years of 1828-1837. Andrew Jackson's election was caused, in part, by the sectional differences between the north and the west and south. Andrew Jackson was representative of the west and south in his virtues and views on national policy prior to entering office. He was for no tariffs and states rights in general. This meant that the majority of southern and western states supported him and allowed him to win a majority vote in the Electoral College.
While his election was effected by sectional differences, his policies were not so much affected because of a rapid turn around to a federalist look of government and supporting the north in most every aspect. Andrew Jackson's election, if not presidency, was greatly affected by sectional divisions. The Tariffs of this era are perhaps the most easily related to sectional differences. Tariffs had always been fought by the south. The south viewed tariffs as a way to tax the south because they would tax the south's imports and exports whereas little or nothing would be taxed in the north. This meant that there was an ongoing war in Congress of the sectional differences.
The tariff of abominations was the boiling point for many southerners which resulted in South Carolina causing another nullification crisis. The sectional differences in the United States nearly broke the union of the United States and were greatly influenced by sectional differences. The Missouri compromise was unquestionably affected by sectional differences, if not caused by sectional differences. The Missouri compromise came about after Missouri petitioned to enter the United States as a slave state.
If this had occurred there would be an imbalance between the number of northern and southern states. To prevent this Maine was admitted as a free state. Another provision of the Missouri compromise was that no slave state would be admitted from land above the 36'u 30' line with the exception of the Missouri. All of these provisions came about because of sectional differences between slave and free states. The northern (free) states wanted to admit Maine into the union with the addition of Missouri because they wanted to keep an even vote in the senate. The division of the lands which could be admitted as a slave state and a slave state was created because it was hoped that this would end the conflict forever.
While it is true that there would be more land for the free states than the slave states to come from, this was inconsequential because the land about the 36'u 30' was generally not conducive to plantation farming and therefore not conducive to slave labor. The Missouri compromise was very much affected by sectional conflicts. The policies towards Texas were greatly affected by sectional conflicts as well. While Texas was technically completely independent of America, the south was very interested in annexing it and so Texas was treated as a domestic land. Also, the residents of Texas were primarily United States citizens. Therefore, after Texas declared independence it was treated as a state.
Military services were rendered to Texas on an informal basis, slavery was condoned and encouraged in Texas, and Texan citizens were encouraged to participate in American culture. Whereas the north was mostly either indifferent or against involvement with Texas due to the fact that Texas was a slave state, geographically southern, and politically similar to the south. But because the west and south had a majority in the House of Representatives, Texas was supported. Texas was largely affected by sectional differences.
The political differences between the areas of the nation caused many policies and a presidential election to be influenced. The tariffs of this period infuriated the south. The Missouri compromise had its terms decided by northerners so that a compromise could be reached with the south so that Missouri could become a state. Texas, though not technically domestic, was treated as domestic with domestic policy and was influenced because the south had to compromise with the north so that Texas could be supported. The election of Andrew Jackson to the presidency came about because he appealed to the sections of the country with the most electoral votes.
