My research topic is the military career, Security Police. Next February, I plan to join the Air Force as a SP and this is a good way to get more information on that career. This career is related to America because SPs serve America. As a future career of mine, Security Police in the Air Force serve America in many ways. The first step to having a career in Security Forces is to join the Air Force and go to basic training. First you talk to a recruiter.

You will need to take the ASV AB tests to see what careers you are eligible for due to your scores. Next, you go to MEPS to test for general physical ability. A lot of contracts will have to be signed and you are given dates for basic training and tech school. Basic training is a six-week "summer camp" in San Antonio, TX at Lackland AFB. BMT mentally and physically trains you in many areas.

You will participate in marching, conditioning classes, pt, and obstacle courses. It is designed to prepare for when national requirements put duty ahead of self. Needs will be personal focus, effort, and teamwork. Upon graduation you will need to be able to meet certain fitness requirements. For males, you must run two miles in eighteen minutes, do forty-five sit-ups in two minutes, and thirty pushups in two minutes. Women must be able to run two miles in twenty-one minutes, do thirty-eight sit-ups in two minutes, and do fourteen pushups in two minutes.

BMT will help to build stamina of body and mind. (D) The next step to being a SP is to go to tech school. It is sixteen weeks long. It is also in San Antonio, TX. However, it is at Randolph AFB. You will learn physical apprehension, restraint techniques, and challenging procedures.

You will go through a series of air base ground defenses. It will include patrolling through the Texas jungle looking for "enemies", land navigation, and blowing things up. You will have to learn to clean, take apart, and inspect weapons such as the M-16, M-9, M-249, M-60, and M-203. You will have to look for busted parts in the weapons. Tech school will also teach you about criminal law so you know people's rights. Upon graduation, you will be required to run ten miles, pass army requirements for their pt tests, know rights of people, learn criminal law, plus you " ll need to be able to do everything a normal cop does plus some.

After graduation of tech school you are sent to your duty base. (G) "It is the job of the Security Forces to maintain the rule of law on the base. All police activities associated with an Air Force base, from securing the perimeter of the base to being a dog handler, fall under this career field". (B) Being a cop in the Air Force is like army infantry, police officer, and swat all rolled into one. To be a SP you are required to pass basic training and tech school, pass army requirements for their pts tests, know the rights of people so you do not violate them, know the ins and outs of criminal law, and be able to perform your job. (G) Being a SP includes many duties.

You will have to protect all personnel and property you " re assigned to. You may even have to protect the Vice President, President, and their planes Air Force One and Two if called to. Your priority level resources can include nuclear weapons and planes. Daily activities will include speed measuring, drug and alcohol devices, conducting investigations, securing perimeters of the base, and the flight line. You will also have to provide armed response. SPs also direct vehicle and pedestrian traffic.

(C, G) Your pay will vary by the rank you hold and the number of years you have been in the Air Force, not by your job title. Most people out of basic make $1064.70 a month. However, since I am in JROTC my rank out of basic will be E-3, A 1 C. I will make $1356.90 a month. This does not include allowances and housing pay. You get $200 allowance a month for food at the chow hall, free medical, free housing with all utilities paid in the dormitories or if you have a spouse, in base housing, and $190 for uniform items as needed. They give you two sets of all needed uniforms right out of basic.

(F) A few benefits of joining the Air Force are medical and dental paid, free housing, you get a career without having to go to college, free college, you get to travel to new places, and you get to have the feeling of knowing you " ve helped people. However, the disadvantages of being a cop in the Air Force are you have to work long hours-you " ll work twelve to fourteen hours a night, people don't always appreciate what you do for them, you " re the last people in the Air Force to get anything, stress from seeing dead bodies, etc, a lot of people hate cops until they " re needed, personal and social lives suffer due to long work hours, and you " ll get little to no contact with home when you " re on TDYs. (G) Cops put their lives in danger everyday they work. The die, fight, and protect to help others in their country.

They are often sent overseas on TDYs and deployments for three to six months at a time to establish bases, teach new SPs, and to set up bases. They get little days off when they " re overseas. Cops put strangers before themselves (service before self) to save the lives of others. The best way I've heard it put is by a cop at Peterson AFB. "I put myself at risk every night I go to work and I do it without hesitation and without regret so that two year old little kid playing in the front yard has a chance to live life and then watch his kid play in his front yard".

(Mogg, 2003) "What better reward is there than knowing that these people know life as it is because of the things you sacrifice". (Mogg, 2003) Security Police, a career in the Air Force, helps to serve America in many ways. SPs must put strangers before themselves. They must save lives and protect all citizens. SPs die, fight, and protect each day they work to ensure a better way of life for Americans. What better career could I have chosen to help my country?
