In these first to weeks I have already learned better study habit, learned how I learning better, and learned team learning skills. I also have some professional goals too.
The University of Phoenix provides a professional graduate degree program for individuals who hold or will hold positions of managerial responsibility in organizations. I want to learn key business concepts and to better develop my professional skills in a number of areas. I want contemporary knowledge in areas of managerial decision-making, including marketing, finance, operations management, and general administration. I want to learn the impacts of key external environmental contingencies on businesses and the industries in which they operate.
Develop professional competencies in the areas of teamwork, communication, critical thinking, and cross-functional business applications. Be aware of societal expectations of organizations and the importance of making managerial decisions within an ethical framework. Working full time and having a family make managing time for school very difficult. I often find myself asking for more hours in a day or a couple more days in the week.
If I learn to better manage my time this will allow me to focus better on the task in front of me, without worrying about what I didn't do or what I need to do. Time management will also help me be a better student and a less stressed husband and father. I always find myself telling my kids how important it is to further their education, so I figure what better way to practice what I preach. They really get excited about homework time, now that they know daddy has homework too. I'm sure I will need a lesson in career development, cause we all know things don't always workout as planned. Career development my extend my goals further than I have envisioned.
What meets my needs at this stage of life may not work at another. Technology never stops, so we should never stop learning. This program will also give me the knowledge to make consumer decisions. All the information I need is available to me if I make a conscious effort to become informed about any given topic. I know I need a refresher in my math skills. Since high school I haven't done much math at all.
I hope to learn some business math and accounting to give me an advantage in such diverse areas as completing income tax returns, computing interest paid on loans or credit cards, investing in retirement plans, and receiving the maximum benefits offered at work. Often benefits that employers offer go unused because individuals don't take the time to calculate their value. I don't want to be a victim. And finally communication skills, this is personal as well as professional.
I want to improve my ability to communicate effectively with both small and large groups of people.
