The prologue explains how two ill fated lovers die because of a long bitter feud between their families. After the prologue the scene is seton a street in Verona where members from the two families, the Montague's and the Capulets, have a fight and are warned that the next fight will result in punishment by death by Prince Escalus. Romeo enters the story with his cousin Benvolio and they talk about Romeo being in love with Rosaline. Mean while, at the Capulet home, Paris asks approval to marry Juliet.
The Capulets then arranged a party for Paris and Juliet to meet. While on the street, Romeo and Benvolio are approached by a Capulet servant who invites them to the Capulet party. Romeo agrees to go because he knows that Rosaline will be there. Before Romeo goes to the party he has a dream that something bad will happen if he goes; Benvolio tells him that dreams are meaningless and they leave. When Romeo and his friends arrive they are discovered by Tybalt, Juliet's cousin, Who wants to kill them but is stopped by Juliet's father. During the course of the party Romeo and Juliet meet and instantly fall in love.
Romeo no longer loves Rosaline and is totally focused on Juliet. At the end of the party Romeo hides in Juliet's orchard and overhears her talking about him. He then tells her he loves her and they make wedding plans that same night. Romeo then goes to Friar Laurence to make final arrangements. Romeo and Juliet get married on a Monday evening in Friar Laurence's cell. Romeo then leaves to meet his friends. He finds out that Mercutio is killed by Tybalt and goes after Tybalt to return the favor and kills him. Romeo is caught by the Prince and is banished from Verona. Juliet is later told by her mother that she will marry Paris later that week on Thursday. Juliet gets so upset she goes to visit the Friar and is given a potion that will make her look dead for forty two hours. This way she can run away to live with Romeo while her parents and everyone else thinks she is dead. A letter was sent to Romeo explaining Juliet's plan but he never receives it and when he hears that Juliet was dead back to Verona and buys some poison which he drank so that he could be with Juliet. Juliet then wakes up from the potion and finds Romeo dead she in turn grabs a dagger and stabs herself to death to accompany Romeo. There laid the two star crossed lovers dead side by side ending the horrible feud between both families.
Real life stories like this one have been written in news papers and broadcast on television through out recent years. There was a story about a Pakistani man, Kun war Ahs on, who is now paralyzed after being shot for marrying a woman, Riff at Afridi, from a opposite cultural group. Hew as shot by the woman's father, brother, and other members of their culture. Both of their cultures disagree with what they did and are ready to kill them because they can not deal with inter racial marriages. Another story but this time located in the United States is about two young teenagers. The two of them went to school together and spent all their time together.
The relationship got too serious for the girls mother to handle and demanded that she not see her boy friend any more. This of course made the couple extremely angry and they went behind their parents backs and continued seeing each other. The couple in the end decided to committed suicide together so that they could be with each other forever. In Bosnia there was a story about two twenty five year olds, Bosk o Bric and Admira Is mic, who attended the University of Sarajevo and dated for several years. They were forced to keep their love for each other a secret from their families ethnic groups. The couple tried to escape by running through the two armies battle field.
Boskowas shot and died instantly and Admira was also shot but she managed to crawl to Boskoand died on top of him. The two of them were buried together because Admira's mother thought that they went through enough to be together and they should not have to fight to be with each other anymore. All these stories are linked up to Shakespeare story and obviously show how people can be so ridicules and judgmental. A person's background or colour should not have to get involved in a situation of two people wanting to be together. The sad part to these stories is that they keep appearing around the world and no one is learning from passed situations and more and more people are dying. Who would of known that a play that someone wrote years ago would become so real in today's society.
It is extremely sad that different cultures can not get over the past and live life with out any prejudice.
