In a sense, they have only had each other since they were very small. I think that everyone needs at least one best friend that they can spill their heart out to, someone who knows your deepest, darkest secrets, and someone who you can depend upon and believe in; someone who also believes in you.

Even when a friendship is put to the ultimate test, if true friendship exists, you can overcome any type of situation; true friendship forgives. There may be times when one friend may give strength to the other when that person needs a helping hand. Friends sometimes give us back our faith in God when it has left us, just as Simon did for Joe. Even though Simon and Joe had other peers, they did not share the same relationship with them. Simon and Joe understood each other, and they were like brothers. Sometimes friends can be closer to you than people in your own family.

True friends can forgive, just like Joe forgave Simon. Simon felt responsible for Joe's mother's death. I can't imagine how he felt, that gut-wrenching feeling that you just can't fix or forget. But, Joe forgave Simon because he knew it wasn't his fault. If they had not been true friends, Joe might not have been able to see through something so tragic, as the death of his beloved mother, to forgive Simon even though Simon thought that it was God's will. The experience brought them together like no other they had ever experienced, and they remained best friends.
