Frederick Douglas is trying to convey the point that if one knows how to read and write and is literate then they cannot be the property of someone else because they have the knowledge to prevent that due to their power as a person. For a master who has slaves not able to read and write, he can keep them down because reading and writing proficiency translates into overall intelligence and empowerment. I believe that this situation is made so because knowledge is power in this world and if the slave has the knowledge to read and write then he will only be a slave for so long, however if a slave has no education at all to them then it will be hard for that slave to get out of the rut known as being someone else's property. For a Master to have complete intellectual power over his slaves translates into keeping them from overturning him in any way. Douglas narrative can be read as an argument against slavery in several ways. Slaveholders see this piece of writing and realize that for them to keep their slaves, they must keep them from continuously learning or slaves will eventually rise above their current setting.
Those who were abolitionists believe that this is further evidence that slaves should be given freedom and equal rights to those considered above them. Those who did not own slaves and were undecided on if slavery was right or not see this piece of writing as a way of a slave saying that they have what it takes to be equal to free men and woman. This article would make many undecided on slavery realize that it is taking away a chance for many men and woman to be literate and successful. I believe a lot of what Douglas says in this piece can be used in the world that we lived in today.
The uneducated people in many third world countries are oppressed and dictated by their rulers.
