Solution Concentration example essay topic

Plan: The aim of this investigation is to measure the rate of osmosis activity in a potato chip when placed in different solutions. Osmosis is the diffusion of water from a high water potential to a low water potential across a partially permeable membrane. Osmosis continues in this environment until a state of 'equilibrium' is achieved where the water gradient in one are is no different to another. The experiments I conduct will show the rate of osmosis between the potato chip and the solution.

Variables: The variables which affect the rate of osmosis are: . Temperature. Surface area. Solution Concentration. Length of experiment. Type of solution Temperature: Will affect the movement of surrounding molecules and so change the rate of diffusion.

Surface Area: With a larger surface area, it will mean that there is more area for osmosis to take place. Solution Concentration: Should mean that more or less water will move in or out of the potato chip. Length of experiment: A longer experiment will mean longer time for osmosis to occur. Type of solution: The solution being diluted may have an effect on how much osmosis may occur. The variable I will be changing to see a different of osmosis is the concentration or molarity of the salt solution.

Method: To make it a fair test I will be doing the experiments in the same room at the same time to keep temperature change minimal, keeping the chips the same general size, repeating the experiment 3 times for each concentration of solution and keeping the length of the experiment the same. The experiment will be set up using the following equipment: Potatoes, Sodium Chloride Solution (different molarities needed), Water, Paper towels, a Balance, Stopwatch, Test tubes and a Rack. Each experiment will last 20 minutes long and will repeated 3 times for each concentration.
