Introduction When an assignment or task is given, prioritizing and time-management skills will have one be able to follow through to ensure the completion in a time frame that is satisfactory to the requestor. In this case study, one will read of the problems that have arisen with poor time management skills and the results. One will also read the alternatives, possible solutions, and the recommendations to avoid errors in the workplace. Background Carl Robins employed by ABC, Inc, as a Campus Recruiter states that after six months, he was able to recruit 15 new hires. However, there were several errors that were made from the beginning of his recruitment, which is the reason why he seeking a resolution to the situation. Chronological Sequence of the events April: Carl recruited 15 new hires to work in the Operations Department.

Carl also scheduled Orientation on June 15, which was to be held in the Training Room. This was to ensure tentatively that the new hires would start by the month of July. May 15: Monica Carolls, Operation Supervisor, contacted Carl regarding documents and procedures that was to be completed by all the hires before orientation. Carl assured Monica that he would coordinate and organize the training, orientation to review manuals and policies, physical examinations, mandatory drug screens, and other issues that were in accordance with orientation. Two weeks later: After Memorial Day, Carl decides to follow up on the task that Monica went over with him on May 15. Carl states this is when he realized there were errors that were made because no mandatory drug screens were completed, no transcripts or applications were submitted to complete the new hires files, three out of fifteen policy manuals were missing pages, and the scheduled date for the training room overlapped with Technology Services Department reservations.

Alternatives The possible alternatives as the situation was discussed to come to a solution were several, such as:" Mediation with a third party that is neutral between both parties considering there is two departments that are involved". Contacting all the new hires to inform the hires that the tentative start date will be pushed further, possibly another month, this is August or September". Suggestion to Carl to inform his Supervisor and Monica Carolls regarding the situation and to request to have both supervisors to come to another solution. However, these alternatives are not in the best interest of all parties that are involved because if there was to be mediation, both parties have to be unwilling in the beginning to come to a resolution, which has not occurred at this time. If Carl were to contact the new hires, this would create a backlog in Operations that may cost an increase in overtime pay for current employees within the operations department due to deadlines that Operations may have to meet until all the new hires are trained and orientated regarding their job description. In suggestion of the last possible alternative, Carl has only been with the company for six months and to request for his supervisor and Monica Carroll to resolve the problem that Carl has created will have his performance measure decrease according to the supervisors rating that Carl is not able to take care of problems that has arisen through him.

Proposed Solution The proposed solution for Carl is to: " Discuss this with his supervisor and Monica Carolls for them to be aware of the situation. In addition, Carl must come up with a plan on how to resolve this situation. Contact Technology Services department and inform Joe, if the department is willing to give that one-day, June 15 to the Recruiting department for the Orientation". Contact all new hires via telephone and letter, informing that all new hires must submit transcripts and applications by a deadline, which should be a week before the orientation date. This will ensure that all pertinent data are ready for inputting into files". Schedule with physician, who is contracted by the company for physical examinations and drug screen the entire week before orientation.

Also, inform new hires via letter and telephone of the mandatory requirements that must be completed one week before orientation date". Inform the physician's administrative staff that all requests are to be labeled STAT (as soon as possible) and results must be faxed as soon as results are ready". Request for administrative staff to create three new manuals with all information. Recommendations There was a final meeting scheduled with Carl to discuss these possible solutions.

Carl agreed that if followed as instructed, he would still be able to conduct the orientation on the original date, which would enable the new hires to start employment in July with ABC, Inc. Also, suggested and discussed with Carl about keeping a calendar within his Outlook at the jobsite that will notify him through reminders of what tasks needs to be completed. This will also assist Carl if he needs to schedule a meeting or reserve a room. Encouraged Carl to learn how to prioritize assignments and to utilize time-management skills to avoid situations that may result in a loss of job should this situation occur again in the future due to distrust or lack of confidence from supervisors. Also, informed Carl that once he develops the skills of prioritizing and time-management, this will ensure Carl of the future plans and meetings with personnel to follow through with their requests with results of timeliness and satisfaction to both parties.
